Just out of interest- has anyone mounted 2-3 10mm on a GW base to use for 40k. Game plays the same- its the base that shoots, but you no longer have people using bolters at what appears to be 50 feet.
I have neither the time nor the crayons to explain why you are wrong.

No.

Its a good idea though.  Have you?

How did it work out?

I'm unlikely to as the 40k rules (or indeed the GW WFB rules) are, in my opinion, pretty poor, having been designed to give the kids a battle to conclusion in about an hour.

Which is a bit odd because they produce some excellent rules in their 'specialist' and historical ranges (Legends of the Old West and variants, Warmaster and variants, etc.)

Agreed - I think that Mordheim was great - improved on with LoTR & then further improved by LOTOW & LOTHS

The Warmaster engine is stunning...

I do have fond memories of 3rd ed 40k & 5th / 6th WFB..but not played them for *ever* now...

Its my son who has the 40k stuff, and when I suggested this you would have thought I'd suggested I was some form of evil heretic- GW games and figures can only be used together.  A boxed set of Imperial Guard has disappeared into his room following me stating that I would use them with other rules as I don't like 40k.  Apparently GW wil come round your house and take them back if you try this (He was 11 when he said this).

I think WHFB (I don't mind the Fantasy one too much- I'd rather play this than 40k) would be good if you did the same sort of thing- I reckon you could get 3x2 figures on a 20mm base, giving a realistic looking 30x8 figure unit (5x4).  Given GW plastics work out at about £1 each you would make a 35% saving. Hell of a lot of painting though  :o

Hi I made some conversion to 40k using pendraken civil war soldiers

Wow, what an inspiring thread.

Amazingly, it never once occured to me to mount 10mm figures on 28mm bases. Thank`s for the inspiration :D

Hmmmm, I am not a lover of Games Workshop rules or `officialdom` on many levels; but I DO love their original hard cover Warhammer 40K Rogue Trader and the supplements that went with these fabulous rules (anyone else remember Squats).

I think I may dig out there rules and give Last Hussar`s idea a go.

Cheers.

of course remember the squats!!!

I am not particulary fan of GW, but love the 40k setting. Reading somewhere in this forum someone (sorry for my bad memory) suggest to play 40k rules with 10mm figures. I had those conversion done just for fun a year ago... but the idea that I read trigged something in my head.

I only have the 1edition of 40k (rogue trader), and I never played or read the other editions. So this eastern I clean the dust apart of the rogue trader book. Read again the combat rules and palytested some games. I do enjoy them.

Actually I am trying more conversions with pendraken miniatures inspired in the old fashion rogue trader 40k world. And also star wars... I will post them! If someone of you try the same it will a pleasure to see them

Hail jchaos79,

Wow, you sound like you`re way ahead of the game on this one.

Yeah, if I do pick this one up again, like you, I`ll stick to the original GW ideas they had for the Warhammer 40K universe (with the exception of Genestealers; I still prefer the original take they had in 1st edition Space Hulk... way before they got lumped together as part of the Tyranid Hive collective). Of course, none of the new 40K universe history can be used alongside it, as GW made so many changes - nothing of old matches anymore... for example the leader and Primogenitor of the Blood Angels goes by a completely different name, and the history of the Harlequin Eldar is utterly different, etc etc.

Cheers,

Six

Genestealers are now with tyranids?? I prefere the rogue trader "universe".

Anyway, I could post some pics of home games... some figures are from wwii an others are not painted, but I think it could represent how was the game

Have you tried Epic Armageddon? It's mass combat in the 40k universe using 6mm figures based five men to a base. It's incredibly intuitive and fun to play and captures the feeling of their best artwork which shows absolutely massive armies grinding each other to death in their unique sci-fi setting. I like the background of 40k but the actual warhammer 40k rules were sketchy 10 years ago and have got worse and worse over time and more child-friendly to the point of being awful. Epic on the other hand is cheap to get into (the rulebook is free on their specialist games site), well supported with miniatures and absolutely top fun to play.

The rules are also easy to convert to WWII and other eras and do a top job of modelling morale, command and control and armour. Can't recommend it highly enough. Here's a picture I stole off the internet to show you the miniatures in action.

Very nice picture!! And the color scheme seems like a pic of the "real world"

Never try epic, and sometimes tempted to do it. I always try to not start with another scale (6mm) because it could happen that I will discover I would like more 6mm than 10mm. That could be horribol :-X for me...

At the moment I still with 10mm  8)

Never try epic rules, to avoid the same temptation (also epic figures are really expensive)

No, don't change, 6mm figures provide only 60% of the fun of 10mm...

I know I'm resurrecting this thread, but ...

I made the mistake a couple years ago of scratch-building a game of Space Hulk for my son, and he's gone overboard with 40k. Have pity on a poor father's hobby budget!  ;)

Seriously though, would it be possible to put together a small line of "Space Knights" i.e. not-Marines? Bulky power armor with big SMG's and shoulder pads, maybe modeled on Crusader knights to avoid IP restrictions, but obvious all the same? I'm imagining "Knight" troopers, various command types, heavy weapons, and melee weapons. A "Heavy Knight" with some different arm options (essentially a 15mm figure) for the Termies, and some sort of Walker. There's not too many variations when you get right down to it, but if it works ...

Just a thought. The explosion in 15mm sci-fi hasn't gone this route, but given the price of even Epic figures one has to wonder if there wouldn't be interest.

Interesting idea, are there any pics online of the kind of 'look' you're talking about?  I'd like to extend the Sci-Fi at some point, but unfortunately we don't really have any Sci-Fi designers at the moment.
