Miniaturised Kings of War with 1/4 dimensions, using 10mm Pendraken miniatures

I like to play big battles on small areas, and as in Kings of War (KoW) we don't take single miniatures out of units as casualties, the system is easily convertable to smaller scales with miniatures fixed to bases.

KoW normally uses 28mm miniatures, so changing dimensions to 1/4 we get 7mm, but I prefer 10mm as "golden scale", where one can see from tabletop distance what miniatures are in a unit - so I'll use 10mm Pendraken as they are affordable and in great variety.

Bases for the units will be cut out from 1mm steel sheet, and the playing area will be magnetic sheet (like in fridge magnets). Playing area 6x4 feet translates to 1,5x1 feet (1/4 dimensions, 1/16 area) - I plan to make a folding flat box, like in chess to store everything inside.

As my first army I've chosen Undead, as they are easiest to paint ;)

Cleaned up miniatures are glued in a row on wooden tongue depressors with a strip of doublesided adhesive tape, and sprayed matt black.


They are drybrushed white, then GW Bleached Bone, then details are painted as needed, mostly with washes, then everything is covered with GW Agrax Earthshade wash



Painted miniatures bases are cut down to enable tight fit on bases - I want them to look like proper units - then glued with super glue to metal bases that I cut out of sheet using dremel with cutting wheel

Nice first post, lehcyfer. Not really into Fantasy - except maybe Lord of the Rings ..... Game of Thrones .... (jings! maybe I am?) - but these Undead paint up really well. Like the 'crowded' look also - makes each base look like a force to be contended with.  :-bd
I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I needed to be.

Those skellies look really good - are they the new warband sculpts? I like the painting too, they look really crisp, and the limited palette ties them together.

We played lots of KoW with 10mm figures, but kind of wen the other way, and used the 28mm unit sizes and distances, and just had loads of figures in a unit.

But I do like the idea of the 1/4 scale version, and that you have the freedom to start from scratch with basing, we were very constrained by having hordes of 40x20mm based stuff.  Trimming the bases to get loads of figures works well too.

Have you tried basing any horses yet? Your troop bases look quite shallow, and I know cavalry ones are a bit deeper, but it might be tricker getting horses on them?

Thanks for good words. It's always good to start with something interesting :)

@fred. - I bought warband army (because of cheaper) plus some bits and pieces. Are you sure that sculpts are different? I thought it was just a question of packaging...
I'll cover horses in this post ;)

So for the next models I took cavalry and zombies (cavalry first)








To stop horse models from sticking out of the base limits, in regiment I pushed the second rank into the first (and limited it to two models)




And in troops I've glued them askant (here is my trial of texture paint for the base



Zombies were painted more colorfully





Where there lumberjack chopping wood chips fly



Up to now (added two troops and one regiment of cavalry, and a horde of zombies. I've also made one horseman a hero/general - making his horse standing on hind legs):
