The battle was hard-fought and bloody. Lessons learned:
1) Persians should maximise their use of Greek mercenaries, who give very good value for money.
2) My rules are too soft on chariots. The things should not be acting like a normal HC regiment, charging, rallying, charging again....
3) An advance in echelon works if you have decent support troops.

The thureophoroi did a fine job containing the Indian and Median threat on our right wing. Less agreeably, the unreliable Arabs decided to commit themselves to the Persian cause once my Macedonian LC were tied up against the Saka.

Too often ancient tabletop battles are over before the heavy foot engage. This one was more convincing; there was an extended and determined push of pikes and spears, and something of the wargamer's waltz, with flank attacks abruptly broken off to protect their own flanks many times.

Nice looking game!

Now stop taking pictures, you make me want to buy hoplites , and i can't keep up with my painting backlog!

Luckily i still have basic impetus and enough paper top down Spartans , to scratch the itch when it presents itself!

Here we see the death of Alexander, which nearly ended the battle. Fortunately, Persian morale was so weakened by losses by then that they broke and ran at the end of the round, following the defeat of two of their mercenary units. The Macedonians were in no state to pursue, however.

p.s. The Great King would like to hear from you if you have any ideas about how to make all those crummy light infantry affect the battle other than by running away from Greeks, Indians, Macedonians, and Scythians.

Newlines and Magister Militum also make some rather good hoplites, so you can get a pretty mix of equipment but compatible poses.

I'll be chatting with one of my group's players first, he has a crusade project going, but i think he went 1/72.

I have always liked pendrakens spartans though!

FierceKitty

Yes, I've included some of those.

Nice looking game, although any pictures with a phalanx in the front and centre are good.
