As Paul and Roy have been very busy with the trenches for the WW1 game at the end of this month I put together a General Quarters 1/2 game with some Navwar 1/3000 ships that I've been working on slowly for a while now.

The scenario involves a night action  "somewhere off the coast of Southern Norway" in early 1945 with the Kreigsmarine transferring its last heavy units to the Baltic to assist with the crumbling Eastern front.....The Royal Navy sends in a cruiser squadron to intercept the German cruisers and the convoy they are escorting.

For the coastlines I used some Minibits 40mm MDF hexes that I got with the intent of using them as coastal scenery for naval and air (thats another story though  ;) ) games.

As the scenario calls for a shore battery and light house I used a few hexes for the basis for the required items. with features made out of plastic card and cardboard. The lighthouse comes from the end of an old windmill that my daughters had disgarded  :)

Somewhat to my surprise the others were very impressed with the effectiveness of the hexes as shoreline terrain  :o I must say I hadn't really set it up before the game to see what it looked like but it does look OK - simple but effective.

Here's some pictures:

I'll have to look later on a full sized screen, but from what I could make out on my phone they're pretty spiffy  :-bd

Yeah, they've given me a few ideas for what to do with the ones that fall off my sproggs' craft projects that get scattered around the house!  ;)

Cheers!

If you select the BBCode option from Flickr's share panel, it gives you all the code you need to include the picture in the post. For example:

Personally I usually trim of the text description, but left it here to show what the full code produces.

And excellent use of the hexes, they do indeed work rather well.

Like a lot of really really good ideas when you see it you think, "why didn't I think of that" =D> =D> =D>

Those hexes are going to be really useful for my ancient naval games when I get that project underway :)
The coast and islands were a major feature of many of these battles and I was wondering how I would simply represent all the different coasts.

The hexes really work well - I think its because of the breaking up of the colour with the various brown areas - makes them look more natural.
