The Turks held out! The combined Polish, Austrian and German states relief force blunted itself on the Turkish defence. Atrocious morale save by the allies (me) in the 1st 2 rounds of Turkish shooting disrupted the attack so badly I was not able to recover.

It was a large game - 41 units on the Turkish side and 44 on the Allied side of much better quality, game was fast paced and fun.

Cheers

I've played Hail Caesar and whilst they promise much, we found that it was so hard to find the relevant rules as they are spread through the book. Checking for rules constantly spoilt the game for us. Compare this to the Osprey rulesets (Dux Bellorum, Lion Rampant, Honours of war) where it is pretty damned easy to find what you want, leaving you to play the game. Sometimes less is more...

Agree with Steve. Finding all the unit rules is a right royal pain. :(

I spent a good week writing an additional rule sheet for just this and got fed up finding things I had missed later on when reading the rules again :'(

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? -
Airfix Battles Intro Wargamne with house rules...

2) What armies were confronted? -
US troops (I substituted Brit minis as I don't have US...) vs. Wermacht

3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? -
No, it was a test shot, but they're easy enough

4) and... was the first time do you use the ruleset? -
Yes as a miniatures game, house ruled from the boardgame...

5) How many players were in the game? -
One, me...

The game as published is a boardgame with a squared map & counters - however, it advertises an upcoming expansion with rules for full measured movement & miniature terrain. I made up a few house rules...

Seems fine as an intro, very simple rules, card driven.

Ten More Sons, 2 players, Ava Burmese vs Ming Chinese. Rules worked smoothly, presenting a few handy openings for a mobile detached force to turn the Burmese flank. Now I have to soothe the wife's ruffled pride....

Three reasons:

1.  We've not played them before to it was faltering and a bit of a learning experience.

2.  We're used to Black Powder which is similar but significantly different in the way it plays.

3.  The rulebook isn't exactly transparent and easy to refer to.

After our first session i get the impression its a good game but there's some hard yakka to learning them.   :D

That's pretty much our feeling. But then why bother when say Sword & Spear or Dux Bellorum give you a nice 'Ancient's' game with minimal pain?

fred.

At the back of the HC book is a few page summary of all the rules, without all the fluff and pictures. This is much more useful for actually playing the game. Once you get the hang it plays pretty smoothly - we went from WM style rules to HC, so it was a pretty smooth transition as lots of stuff is shared between them.
