What Ruleset Did You Use In Your Last Game 2016

1. Regimental F&F

2. Federal cavalry v. Confederate infantry

3. 2 player game.

4. Used these rules a lot, but still find trouble with them because there are so many bits and pieces to remember and I am rapidly going off that type of rulebook as I get older. On another table a player using the same rules discovered (no one else in the club could remember it or even ever using it) that a 10 on first fire does not cause a unit to go low on ammo.

5. I think 4 has just answered 5.

6. So how did the game go? Reasonably smoothly but probably loads of rules forgotten or ignored. There's that weird slightly involved rule and another where your not involved but you contribute to outnumbering, and we ignored the table edge, as it was only a four foot square table, and someone else in the club then had a rant about "off the table means off the table" and I had to gently remind him that:
a) he was not playing in this game,
b) the two people who were were actually enjoying it. (Reminds me, again, of what happened at Phalanx).
Oh, incidentally, it was Buford (me) at Gettysburg, and the Federals gained a narrow victory.

Thank god for the home wargames room!

I especially like that when they haven't actually ever played the sodding rules. Here, let me comment on something I am not only not involved in, but also know nothing about!

I rathe rlike the F&F rules of various stripe, but am in agreement re:fiddlyness and faffiness on rules. Whenever I use them I spend more time thinking "wait a minute, I'm missing something..." than actively playing :/

In many ways I think BBB has streamlined F&F, which is why I'm playing much more ACW with them and also with Altar of Freedom these days. I may well give that McPherson's Ridge game another go, but with FOB2. For one thing the units will fit better as they are all four bases, but with different characteristics.

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - Sharp practise
2) What armies were confronted? - British & Spanish vs French in the Peninsular
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Not bad having played CoC

A good, fun intro game which is what I think these rules will be good for.

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - Last Night on Earth
2) What armies were confronted? - err Zombies v Survivors
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Yes
4) and... was the first time do you use the ruleset? - No
5) How many players were in the game? - 4 plus a scenario coordinator

Ok so not really a wargame but effectively a miniature skirmish game.

We got lost in the forest, it was full of zombies, many of us died, but we found the relay tower and scaled Jacobs Ladder when our rope broke, the Sheriff died like a hero (so did the Nurse, several students and a drifter or two) but I got away to warn the next town..  VP was at 4:2 to the zombies after the last scenario, we changed that to 8:5. I don't care what you say I'm claiming that as a win  :D

Last but one game:

1. Honours of War

2. French v. British SYW

3. Very comfortable with these rules

4. No

5. Two player game

6. It was the Surprise at Spittelwitz scenario from the rule book. The French sprung a surprise and got well rogered for their trouble - needless to say I was the French.

Love that game. Just can't find anyone to play it with

1. Wings of War

2. One of those 3 wing Fokker planes, and another one that only had two wings v. a Sopwith Camel and another British two winged plane.

3. Seemed to play very smoothly and very quickly.

4. I had never used these rules before and it was only the second time I've ever played an air wargame.

5. Four plus the scenario co-ordinator.

My impression was that, for such an expensive game, it was a very random affair. I managed to get one clear shot in and the Germans won, but I was not really very clear about what was going on. Wouldn't mind a couple of the planes for use with my WWI armies.

Iacta Alea Est, Two players, Neo-Assyrians and late ancient Egyptians. Good game, with a bit of amazingly bad luck on both sides, which may explain why both armies withdrew with dodgy morale after five rounds, probably getting mugged by the Babylonians on the way home.

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? General Quarters 1 & 2
2) What armies were confronted? US Navy (with HMAS Hobart) v IJN in Iron Bottom Sound September 1942
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? very
4) and... was the first time do you use the ruleset? No
5) How many players were in the game? 5, 3 Japanese and 2 Americans

The game hypothetical with the players picking from three plausible and approximately balanced forces.

It was a night action, hence the star shells and close ranges, in some cases under 5,000 yards :o

The Japanese Battle cruisers had approached down both sides of Savo Island and did significant damage to the the USN Light cruisers which also suffered from IJN torpedoes

As the eastern battle cruisers turned to face the rapidly approaching USN battleships (Washington & South Dakota) the Hiei was overwhelmed by close range radar controlled broadsides from both battleships. This combined with a torpedo hit was enough to sink her :o

The remaining IJN battle cruisers withdrew narrowly avoiding more USN torpedoes.

The IJN destroyer division I was commanding was still approaching from the west along the coast of Guadalcanal and covered the withdrawal of the other IJN ships

A solid USN victory with both US commanders promoted and the IJN commanders transferred to shore commands

No Japanese battleships? In what way is this balanced? Or are they on their way?

Looks like four BC's to two BB's - I'd have to look at the GQ actual stats (which are in the loft, somewhere...) but both sides should give each other a good run for their money!

4 battlecruisers, by the look of it, to 2 battleships not that imbalanced at that range. The Japanese tended not to send battleships down The Slot as US airpower made it unlikely they'd make it back.

I hope the South Dakota had some rule in place to allow for it's Chief Engineer pulling the plug on the electrics in the middle of the action!

Nice pic, good AAR, thanks.

As noted 4 BCs to 2 BBs was roughly even, the Japanese also had more destroyers. Unfortunately half of them were still working there way along the Guadacanal coast and never got into action

Splitting the BCs meant that two of them were effectively fighting the American BBs on their own for a little while. I deliberately had 3 players on the Japanese side to encourage them to split into multiple forces as the Japanese often did.

The commander of the eastern BCs managed to consistently miss his straddle roll by one for several turns which meant he was doing any damage to the US BBs which certainly didn't help

All US radars had several chances to fail, one of the light cruisers lost hers before the battle started
