As I'm cracking on with painting up figures for AVBCW, my mind turns to scenery. As has been mentioned before the N Gauge model railway world is a great source of scenic bits, but I was wondering if anyone had personal favourites for manufacturers or ranges that particularly suited the Inter War period? Especially interested in more rural suitable structures, farms, village buildings, etc., as I'm planning games set in the wilds of North Wiltshire.

I looked at their range but couldn't find any British buildings, just European ones. I will have another look at their catalogue.

Am tempted by the allotments though...

If you're good with MDF there's loads -

http://www.wargame-model-mods.co.uk/ourshop/cat_794177-10mm-Wargame-Buildings.html - as found sold by Pendraken also!

http://www.commission-figurines.co.uk/ - not so much in 10mm, but I suspect emailing Walt for the northern France stuff might be handy.

http://www.supremelittleness.co.uk/ne10mm.htm - at the very least there's a cracking village tap/fountain!

Oooh, they are exactly the kind of thing I was looking for. I do think some emails might be in order, to see what options are available.

Hello Neil

If you're looking for plastic kits you can't go past Kestrel for VBCW. Lots of UK style buildings:-

If you can work with card models there's:-

There's the Kellogs paper village from 1948:-

And these as well:-

I've always found it handy to have a few figures in my pockets so that when I scrounge around in 'el cheapo' shops and see some resin cottages, aquarium ornaments or similar I can do a quick check on suitability. If you're feeling brave you can search around Aliexpress and buy some from there  :).

Edit. Forgot to add the Metcalfe series of N Gauge buildings in precut card:-

Hornby Lyddle is a good option, I've been collecting it for years for a train set project the far flung future... but am giving serious consideration to using them now for AVBCW.

I'd second Kestrel

also worth looking on eBay for various used model railway stuff.

The Metcalfe card buildings are great, the set of 4 farm buildings on the left of that pic suit skirmish gaming nicely, as they can be simply modified to have removable roofs. You can hide an A13 tank in that barn...

The Metcalfe church is a particularly imprsssive model, although I couldn't figure a way to have the roof removable (the walls are too high to get your fingers inside anyway), so I'm going to fix a base so I can remove the whole building...

Just to update everyone, I have so far succumbed to a couple of Kestrel kits, the church and country station, some MDF houses from Wargame Mods and a Metcalfe terraced house kit. Only the church is complete as of now. The station is ongoing and the others are waiting on decisions on how I want to use them.

The Metcalfe farm has been on my radar. I may well bite the bullet seeing as my local railway model shop has one in stock. Instant gratification FTW!

I've decided to go with off table representations of the buildings if they get occupied. May not be as aesthetically pleasing, but at this scale possibly makes sense for model survivability.

Oh, and thanks everyone for the recommendations and suggestions, very useful as always!

Lyddle Lane (Hornby N gauge) has a superb Victorian factory building with chimney.
