At one of the previous Smoggycon shows a gaming group put on a "Cowboy" participation game using Teddy Bear figures dressed in Cowboy clothing..............it was very popular.
A small skirmish game such as AVBCW seems to work as well and both ideas can feature a train or two  :D :D

Just to be really contrary (to what I wrote myself earlier) I'm going to do something along the lines of the Three Musketeers. Not necessarily the Dumas stuff, as I haven't decided upon the figures yet.
I've the rules and have just put in the order for all the bits I need to create the game board.

Figures...  :-\

Thanks again everyone for your input  :-bd

Redoubt Enterprises (http://www.redoubtenterprises.com) and Black Hat Miniatures (http://www.blackhat.co.uk/) both do Three Musketeer ranges in 28mm. There may well be others.

There are a couple of 42mm ranges too from Steve Barber (http://www.stevebarbermodels.com) and Eureka (http://www.fighting15sshop.co.uk)

Blue Moon Manufacturing (https://www.bluemoonmanufacturing.com) from the US do 15mm.

Can you tell I recently rediscovered my copy of the "En Garde" rules? :D

The cover of my copy is considerably more tatty!

Thank you very much  :)

I wasn't aware of the Black Hat line.

There is Ainsty and Warbases producing a very small line in Musketeers. I just don't know how they'd scale up against other manufacturers.
I'd also been looking at Foundry/Casting Room Miniatures along the lines of slightly altering the location of play to somewhere more Spanish or Portuguese (I'm building the board out of Warbases modular buildings - though they could very well resemble somewhere in the South of France). I've considered Macau against local Chinese, Portuguese East Africa against local tribesmen, French Revolutionary Europe, or somewhere in the Caribbean. I'd rather stick with the original French angle though, as most people have heard of the Musketeers.

I was prodded towards this set of free-to-download Swashbuckler rules yesterday, and after reading them I reckon they should make for a fun game.

Game Update:
Warbases terrain purchase made (for collection at Stockton show)
Redoubt Enterprises mail order for the figures sent off.
Rules: With the above I reckon that I've got the basics covered. Though I may tinker with them and try and introduce 'chance' cards for players to use to their advantage/their opponents disadvantage.

Good progress :)

I would suggest keeping the rules as simple as possible, new comers will have plenty to take in as it is (note I haven't read the suggested rules as yet)

That is a good point.

For (club)games I would reckon that random chance cards are something that I'd want to introduce. But, as you say, if the game is played as a participation or with new players the rules should be kept as they are written.

The rules are three pages (A4 size) long. I reckon after a quick game (30mins) players should have got the hang of them and be able/ready to play again.

I'll have to sort out a proper thread when I get going, but for now I'll just post here.

Bought in the figures and made a start on purchasing the terrain. At the moment I'm just putting together the basic layout, and playing about with the design while nothing is fixed down.

The MDF buildings/walls are Warbases and the 30x30 MDF bases Minibits. When its all finished it will be housed on a 2'x2' board, also featuring an area of grass/trees/plants etc in front of the gate area.

Thank you. Started gluing it all down onto its board, so the buildings and walls are all now plumb and square, those flagstones neat and tidy in bonded rows. Also, the gate and two walls butting up to it have been turned to face outside.
