After their last abortive trip beyond the wall with their stores of ammunition and extra bearers added due to casualties the intrepid trio made their way through the gate and out into wild lands.

Their guide had changed from the previous attempt. Luigi Gallo had spent most of his time in the wilds studying the pack hunters and great carnosaurs. A much better option than their previous guide who couldn’t tell a Raptor from a Rex.

As soon as they left the gate they noticed a huge head towering above the nearby trees. A lone Brachiosaur was on the move. It moved forward in a straight line, sometimes moving relatively quickly and at others stopped for a snack from the top of a nearby tree.

As they moved forwards the teams spilt up somewhat with Lord Addisome and Von Smurtzig moving to the right, whilst Sir Sydney dawdled somewhat behind, and the guide Gallo heading to the left. After a couple of turns Von Smurtzig and lord Addisome spotted a herd of around six Hadrosaurs, unfortunately a large Carnataourus spotted them too. As they watched in awe the great carnivore moved closer, suddenly bursting from behind cover to panic the Hadrosuars straight towards the party. The pair of them shouted to the guide who didn’t answer straight away as he had seen what the others hadn’t. A lone Allosaurus was making its way towards them. Flicking his eyes to the right he ordered everyone to stand still and hold their ground. He knew the fleeing Hadrosuars would attract the Allosaurus before it took an interest in them.

Von Smurtzig being a bit of an arrogant, overconfident character bridled a bit a being ordered about by an Italian decided to obey, and promptly open fire on the Carnotaurus. His argument being that he hadn’t moved.  The Winchester report echoed loudly in the still air and the Allosaurus spotted Von Smurtzig and immediately broke into a run. The guide readied his rifle, as did Sir Sydney.
A couple of shots later the Carnotaurus lay dying on the grass. The panicked Hadrosaurs kept running straight at Von Smurtzig and Lord Addisome.

The Allosaurus put on a burst of speed, but faltered as it ran past some large mushrooms, it suddenly wobbled and deposited a large pile of Carnivore poop, the fungi seemed to have some strange effect on it’s body.  Von Smurtzig noticed the large carnivore and decided that it was a target worthy of him and let rip again. The poor beast, struggling with it’s body fighting against it found a number of large calibre shells making its day a whole lot worse, admittedly for a very short time. As a second fusillade erupted from Von Smurtzig’s Winchester ended its life.

The giant Brachiosaur kept on walking and unfortunately the poor dead Allosaurus was in the way, with a great crunching noise and a shower of blood the 30 ton beast ground it into pulp, without even breaking it’s stride.

Von Smurtzig had moved ahead again, attempting to be the first to kill the Parasaurolophus, their intended prey.  The herd of Hadrosaurs had swept by danger close, but the party held their nerve, The German advancing with disdain, his bearer and gun holder following though fear rather than any loyalty. Lord Addisome held his nerve, his bearers wavered, but his calming voice stopped them from running. He waited until the Hadrosaurs had passed by, and he had calmed his men.

By this time the party was split up with Von Smurtzig steaming ahead, The Guide and Sir Sydney holding their ground to the left and Lord Addisome holding his ground to the right.
As the Brachiosaur carried on with its unrelenting amble it swept by Sir Sydney who used its leg to strike his match on before lighting his cigar. He then darted between its legs, his gun bearer following, whist his bearer thought better of it.

The guide ordered everyone to stick together, but only Sir Addisome obeyed.  Both of them and their men headed to the left, skirting the mushroom field and it’s messy corpse. Sir Sydney’s bearer wouldn’t move and was left behind. He suddenly decided that he would stand a better chance of surviving  if he followed Lord Addisome, something in hindsight was not the best choice.

As he was strolling along Sir Sydney heard a strange noise in the bushes and a small dinosaur appeared. The tiny Triceratops had mistaken him for his mummy. Sir Sydney considered taking the little creature home with him, but its real mummy arrived seconds later. Now although Sir Sydney was a brave man, he wasn’t entirely stupid and motioned for his gun holder to back away slowly, the Trike watched them before calling to its calf which gambolled into the stand of trees with its mother.

Sir Sydney and his man breathed a sigh of relief then hurried after Von Smurtzig. Unfortunately the triceratops was still watching and the sudden burst of movement caused it to lower its head and charge.

Sir Sydney’s bearer ran after the guide and lord Addisome unfortunately he ran straight though the mushroom patch and suffered the same chronic stomach cramps and diarrhoea as the allosaurus. This caused him to become shaken.

The triceratops got closer to Sir Sydney, who after checking the sky for a storm, after hearing the rumble of the charging beast. He suddenly realised the reason and turned to find the creature was almost upon him. Sir Sydney and his bearer leapt aside at the last second, avoiding a horrible death under the feet and horns of the angry dinosaur. The triceratops suddenly losing its original target spotted Von Smurtzig’s party jogging on ahead. Anger filled its small mind and she renewed her onward rush at a new target.

Lord Addisome and the guide both fired at the triceratops in an attempt to save Sir Sydney, but both failed to wound the immense beast. After firing Lord Addisome advanced at the double to get a better shot. The guide held his ground and prepared to fire again. A second volley failed to hurt the beast, but Sir Sydney always an overconfident type ran alongside the triceratops and, grabbing its frill, vaulted onto its broad back. He then drew his colt and fired point blank into where he thought its spine was. (Evidently he was wrong in where he thought it was, or his bullets did no damage at all!)

It was at this point that things began to go horribly wrong. Unbeknown to anyone a pack of nine velociraptors had heard all of the shooting and had come to investigate. They appeared behind the guide and his men, who were so intent on the escapade with the triceratops that they failed to notice their arrival and initial movement.

Von Smurtzig hearing the shots behind, turned and found an angry triceratops with a bewildered Englishman astride it screaming at the top of his voice for his rifle. The German’s bearer took one look and fled screaming into the long grass to their front.

Von Smurtzig decided to take the shot, he took aim, fired and the bullet ricochet of the armoured frill and did no damage leaping smartly aside at the last second he avoided the charge.   As he fired a group of Parasaurolophus stood up, the big Male honking a warning to his harem.
Sir Sydney’s bearer bravely rang alongside the angry dinosaur trying his best to hand up a rifle, whilst avoiding being trampled by the beast. Sir Sydney realised that although he had his rifle, it was too long to use effectively, and dropped it, reaching for his colt again. This time he found the ideal spot at the base of the skull and pulled the trigger, the dinosaur roared, faltered and then fell dead, sir Sydney rolling athletically out of the way.

Von Smurtzig fearing that Sir Sydney would gain the killing shot on the parasaurolophus opened fire on the big male. His shot although hitting the target failed to even wound it and the whole herd stampeded away to the north.

It was then that they heard the screaming coming from their rear.

The velociraptors struck and struck hard, within seconds 3 men were being eaten alive and the guide broke and ran, leaving his remaining man to die horribly.
Sir Sydney’s bearer was the first to die; two of the raptors disembowelling him instantly the other two bearers put up a bit of a fight, but being outnumbered they went down in a flurry of blood and screams. One of the raptors spotted the guide running and instinct took over. It gave chase. Lord Addisome bravely stood his ground and fired into the mass of dinosaurs. As he did so he ordered his men to make for the rocky ground behind him.
A fusillade of shots erupted from his weapon, downing one raptor, but unfortunately the one chasing the guide changed direction and leapt straight at Lord Addisome. Who struggled with the three-foot beast and fell wounded to numerous puncture wounds. Luckily for him he was in range and sight of both Von Smurtzig and Sir Sydney who instantly fired, blowing the creature to shreds. They ran forwards and  tried to save the last surviving bearer, but to no avail, even though he had managed to fight of his attackers for three rounds he fell dying as his assailants were blasted from around him. Luckily for the party a scout plane arrived and radioed for assistance and the cavalry were mobilised. Luckily they were, for a hunting party of deinonychus had smelled blood and were moving in to claim the kills for themselves.

By this time the guide had made it to the rocks and was cowering in the relative safety they afforded. Lord Addisome’s bearer and gun holder rushed forwards to help him stand up, luckily for them they did as a rogue male triceratops rounded the pile of rocks and charged straight at the guide, goring him as he cowered there.

Everyone who could fired at the velociraptors surrounding the bodies of the bearers, killing four more. The sound of engines approaching caused them to make a fighting withdrawal towards the oncoming vehicles.

Suddenly to everyone’s amazement the turret on the armoured car swung rapidly to the left and let rip with the heavy machinegun within. They had spotted the deinonychus and had opened fire.
The big raptors  charged the convoy, two more being gunned down by the machine gun, before the rest leapt onto the canvas covered truck, everyone expected the worst, but instead the creatures were thrown back in a shower of electric sparks. Our trio gunned down the remainder before the rescuers dragged lord Addisome, Sir Sydney and their men into the truck. Von Smurtzig refused the lift back to the wall preferring to do the short run back instead of a ride in the back of a protected truck.

A fun game that was let down by the random dinosaur rule, my fault there as I wrote them. Even though they were only arriving on a card by me there were 13 cards that they could appear on, this meant that all of a sudden at the end a whole host of nastiness happened at once. This has now been rectified and they will only appear on a chance of 2 out of 54 (the jokers are in the pack of cards) 3 if you count me drawing a joker, this gives the hunters a beneficial event rather than a negative one.

Sometimes I wonder - why is that frisbee geting bigger - and then it hits me!

Thanks chaps, we had another game tonight, I will write it up when I get back from Glasgow two nights in the big city...woooohooo

The random dino rules were changed and it worked much better, the huighlight was sir Sydney being followed by a curious Anklyosaur, even with random moves and distance it stayed right on his tail  :D

You know you want to :D :D
THe ranges are much more fun, if you miss at 28mm the big scary dinosaur eats you the turn after, at least in 10mm you get three shots before the big scary dinosaur eats you  :D :D :D
