What do folks recommend for their "1860's Canadian Militia" forces? With "armies" of a thousand men, obviously something quite detailed.  I'm just reading up on it now (this book: http://www.amazon.ca/exec/obidos/ASIN/0670068039/canadandwarbo-20 ) and getting quite inspired.

I'm not sure on this one, as I've not spoken to anyone who's reached the playing stage with the figures yet!  I'll ask about though.

Wasn't there a series of articles and some rules about this in an old copy of Miniature Wargames some years back?

Not sure if I still have my stack of back copies but someone else may have :-\

Bit of info from the chap who commissioned the range:

Actions such as Ridgeway can quite feasibly be modeled at 1:1 or 1:2 - i.e company level. This could be achieved by tweaking the scale/basing of other sets.

Depending on what scale battle he is looking at, something like the most recent version of Regimental Fire & Fury, if he is after commercial sets, spring to mind. I am not a fan of the F&F school but these would be easily adapted to the Fenian Raids. Equally something like Larry Brom's Sword & the Flame school could work quite well when adjusted for 10mm figures.

Equally with tweaking anything that is battalion level mid C19th eg 1st Carlist War, Crimean War /ACW would do. That said most deal with corps or division level battles or are wed to larger figures so some work to shape for 10s would be needed. Caliver have a company level set of rules for the Indian Mutiny (15mm IIRC): Sepoy!. The game engine would work quite well but some of the flim flam would need to be reworked. There is also of course Black Powder from Warlord - 28mm orientated rules but as you saw at the open day they can be easily adapted to 10mm

A number of specific suggestions for Fenian Raids can be found in this link, but he would need to join the Fenian Raids Yahoo Group:

Thanks for passing the question along.  I'm basically looking at Ridgeway, so something like two ACW brigades facing off.  And I shall join the Fenian Raids group!  An important conflict, and one that has been officially erased from our official acts of remembrance like some victim of the ministry of truth.

Bit more info from our friend:

Here are a couple of additional possibilities that would require some modifications for Fenian Raids: With MacDuff to the Frontier - intended for Colonial games but it could be modified with some work. Written by Ross MacFarlane for bigger 25mm+ figures but with a lot of possibilities.

Key to making suitable modifications to either these or my other suggestions would be Peter Vronsky's book on Ridgeway but there is a lot of information and there are also links on his website here:

http://www.ridgewaybattle.ca/

A final possibility would be Picquet - I do not not have any experience of the set myself but Jeff Glasco's blog has some interesting comments about using Picquet for small action in the AWI - not Fenian raids but similar sized actions (the eg is Cowpens).

http://jdglasco.wordpress.com/2013/05/03/finally-an-enjoyable-set-of-rules-for-the-american-revolutions-small-battles/

Glasco's blog has some material about using Volley & Bayonet for ACW as well although the action he is planning is corps level. VnB would only work for Fenian Raids at Wing or regimental level.

Interesting - I was just playing with Ross last week - a "not" the US invading Canada game.

This is probably a bit late but can I put in a recommendation for the rules in Neil Thomas' book - Wargaming 19th century Europe' available here:
