You often see them on US half tracks, they were designed to help crossing obstacles, the tracks would push you up onto the roller, which, hopefully you would roll over until the tracks could clear it and the front wheels were over and it wouldn't then crush the front of the vehicle!!!

Do you think when it was designed, they said "wow! What an impressive bit of kit! Aesthetically perfect! What an intimidator! Our enemies will run home to change nappies when the see this rolling towards them!"?

Or was it more like "yeah. Good enough. On time and on budget. No, I wouldn't worry about the rivets."
