Normally the victor writes the histories, but if you will bring a bard from the other side :D

I forgot to ask......As I'm not familiar with the actual gaming side of things......

How does a force lose the battle....Yet win the game ?
If it's too complicated to explain.....Don't worry. ;)

Normally by losing less badly than their historical equivalent or by dying gloriously while inflicting significant delay/ damage on the enemy.

Example of the former would be WW2 Russians halting Barbarossa outside Minsk rather than outside Moscow.

The latter would include Thermopylae or Dunkirk.
There are 100 types of people in the world, those who understand binary and those who can work from incomplete data

In this case whilst the actual fight might decide the geopolitical make up the later to be British Isles, it's the ones who brought the best bards to record their heroic yet doomed deeds that win the hearts and minds and myths for millenia to come.

Good old Arfur disappears under the Saxon tide*, but lives in song and story forever! Or the other way round ;)

In this scenario, you only score victory points by hits caused and received when the Bard is attached to that unit. Also if the Bard is attached to a unit that routs, that score victory points as well.

So even though I won the battle by beating Dave, his heroic deeds as recorded by the Bard won him the game on victory points as outlined above. Hope this makes sense?

OK.....I think I've got that.....Basically down to the Bard being involved in the 'best' clashes between opposing units.....But not a disaster if the Bard's unit takes a beating and gets routed.

Could the Bard himself be 'killed/hit ?' (Or would that even be possible ?)

No, the Bards are not attacked and can move freely around the table at the start of any turn.
