asking this question for  a friend, anyone using a jewellers loupe, can you tell me if you can manually adjust the focus of the lenses, or are they a fixed focus

TIA

Fixed and with a limited focal length. We use 10x ones at work to check stuff and they're a bugger to get stuff into focus with.

10x lenses must have a horribly narrow depth of field, too....Those would give me a splitting headache within a minute or two. :(

Yep, not great to use, but with 0.20mm milling cutters they are useful for checking whether the tips are still on etc as you can't see with the naked eye! Even better is a camera that plugs into the computer and you view the image on the computer screen. We have 10x up to 30x magnification IIRC.

The nearest to the magnification that you use, Steve, are the 5x lenses that I've got for the Optivisor...Which I found truly horrible to try and work with.
I think I only used them once, to try and do a really spiffy face on a 15mm figure.

It was just awful. (The experience...Not the face  ;D ;D ;D)

The tiny face was the only 'bit' that was in sharp focus.....The rest was a yukky blur, which soon gave me the aforementioned headache.
I think they'd be perfect for checking something completely flat.....But with any contours...Not for me !  ;)
