Opel blitz

Hi all.

On some Opel Blitz models and photos there's a plate sized triangle on top of the cab; anyone know what it is and what it did?

It was to signify if the vehicle was towing or not. If up there was something on tow or so I read on another forum once.

Military police on traffic control perhaps, engineers loading onto ferries, ...

I was told that it was indeed used to signal if the truck was towing or not, by the father of a girlfriend at uni. He'd been an artillery officer during the war and said it had been a legal requirement from about 1930 to 1950. He couldn't remember exact dates.

Of course, I was some foreign oik, dating his only daughter so entirely possible I was having my leg pulled but I don't think so.
