Hi all.

My recent foray into BKC is throwing up some questions as to what make an effective battle-group.

So to players of BKC, past or present, do you use recce troops and, if so, how?

Trying to strike the balance here between using them effectively without them getting blown to bits. :-\

I use them mainly for trying to improve the Command Rating of the nearest HQ unit. Sometimes they will spot for FAOs or try and spot Hidden Units. I tend to keep them hidden as much as possible as they don't need line-of-sight for improving the Command Rating.

To be honest it is one of those areas that is not terribly clear in the rules and one that could ideally do with sharpening up. I've never used Recce Support Units so can't comment on these.

Hope this helps?

As Steve says get them to up a units command rating.

At the club we also use recce type units Ie A/C as standard units (-20 points i think). Had some great battles between lots of light stuff

What SteveJ says.

Usually position them so they give their bonus to the command unit you want, then far enough forwards their dice rolls to do that aren't too bad. How far forwards is more art than science, sorry! Depends on the nature of the recce, the terrain and the opposition. They don't need LoS to "recce" so you can usually keep them out of sight but not always, and not always as close as you'd like...

They're harder to hit by a point than normal troops with direct fire which helps, too.

BKC is one of the few rules sets where "recce by death" is not the only option recce can be used! I'd always try and take as much as possible, usually as cheap as possible and with as little gun as possible - you want them recce'ing not shooting!

All of the above :)

My infantry recce usually does pretty well because it's hard to spot. My recce cavalry have the unenviable record of not having survived a game, including a game where they were my only total loss!

Thanks guys, this sort of echoes my own thinking.

As I mentioned in another post, I like "lighter stuff" battles too so the recce troops are able to handle themselves anyway :)

Hi

I would go on the BKC forum for a definitive answer.

We use them to improve a commanders command rolls don`t do much else with them

Jim.

That's what the rules seem to lean towards although there are "other options," this seems to be the most valuable.

Especially for my Ruskies :)

The other options require a specific tactical circumstance or plan. A boost to CV is *always* good :)

Yeah, found that out in the little solo playtest I ran ;)

I always use on foot reconnaissance.
I use them mainly to discover hiding unit.

House rule : you can target the closest HIDDEN unit if you wish so (so you have the choice to have an easier roll on a un-concealed unit and then add the point in command, or discover a unit that is still concealed.

Interesting.  I have no doubt that, as we play more often, we will develop a fair few house rules.
