Barbarian. Here is my advice

Since your friends are not joining you, I would build two small opposed armies. For rules I would start simple. One option is to check out the free rules website pointed above and find something introductory. After that you can try the Captain's free rules (which are great but have a learning scale).  After that you can go for some of the commercial sets out there. Neil Thomas specializes in novice friendly rules (google it up)

For army builds I would do the following

First, if you are not going for skirmish gaming, I would use 20x20 mm square bases, with 3-4 infantry figures per base (4 in two ranks if you will). For cavalry I would either do 25x25 mm bases and 2 figures per base (for artillery 1 gun per base).

Second, I would collect let us say 30 bases of infantry, 10 bases of cavalry and 5 bases of artillery per side, plus 3 bases of commanders. These should give you a good force for each side whatever system of rules you use, and permit small multiplier games (you might win some friends over)

Third, do not hesitate to get a nice book on the ACW, as these can help get you more interested.

Hope these help.

I used :

Infantry :  20 x 20 (based in 4's)
Cavalry : 25 x 25 (based in 2's)
Skirmishers : 20 x 20  (based in 2's)
Artillery : 30 x 30  / 40 x 40  ( 3pdr / 6 pdr)

Command Units will be : 20/30mm round and even 50/60mm round

and use Black Powder(Rebellion) &/or British Grenadier Rules
