School Club

[Bodvoc]

Having been running a school club for the last 12 years I was asked to do something to mark the 200th Anniversary of Waterloo with the boys who come along for a game every Wednesday night. A friend provided me with several old boxes of 20mm plastics and after a quick browse of my rules collection came across the quite easy to play Neil Thomas rules for the period. In the first week of this term we glued lots of figures to bases that I had cut ready for that purpose. Last week we decided to have a game with what we had created so far to test out the rules. A quick spray undercoat of blue for the French and red for the British and off we went. Boldly commanding the British and my fellow commanders and I got trounced by a group of 9-11 year olds who loved every minute of the game and soon picked up the rules. Next week we will add the Highland Infantry and a few pieces of artillery. Our game was the main focus of attention as the rest of the young gamers abandoned their chaos space thingies and came and watched our game, clamouring to play next time.



I think the basic red and blue forces actually look quite good but I do intend for the boys to pick out faces, hands, weapons and trousers etc...over time and paint the bases green and maybe add a bit of flock?

Excellent for teaching tactics, maybe; not so hot for history. But a quick way into wargaming, of course.

Surely the tactics are integral to history. Waterloo would have had a very different outcome without tactics like holding rear slope and forming square;
