(For younger readers: in the days when Techno was young, he hunted aurochs and courted the woad maker's daughter from the next village. When night fell, these poor souls played music on reed flutes and drums made from the skulls of animals to keep their morale up and the evil spirits at bay. Crones hugged the dark corners and made crude effigies of animals and humans as hunting totems or love charms. The old men drank mead from horn cups and babbled stories of their past exploits whilst eyeing the young men with envy and the young women with regret.

Many years later. Many, many, many years later, Thomas Edison stole and patented an idea from Emile Berliner and recorded sound on a physical medium. Fast forward to the 1920's and the "record" was in use in homes everywhere. The concept of a flat disc of some medium such as vinyl, onto which is incised a groove. This groove, when tracked by a needle and amplified reproduces the recorded sound with some clarity.

Sometimes, a scratch on the surface of the vinyl lead to the needle jumping back and so a single phrase from a song could be repeated ad nauseum.
