Seriously folks - doubt its for a telephone cable, that's on the hull rear plate. Think its a winch.

I'm inclined to agree with FSN. I don't see anything that looks like a telephone cable on the hull. It looks like the telephone cable reel shown in this book and on the left-rear turret in this book

Russ - the telephone only had a head set lead, grunt approaches tank rear - picks up phone and comes up on the intercom with what ever he wishes to communicate.

Ah, you were talking about the tank telephone box. My apologies, I mis-understood.

I'd figured it was for a field telephone (to connect to other tanks, or to headquarters, or whatever), rather than for talking to the PBIs.
