Just me....Or something I need to down load for the PC ?
Seem to be getting a 'link bar' (?) down the left side of the forum pages and annoying little adverts in the bottom right hand corner.

Seem to remember something that the chap who built the old PC put on which isn't on the new one.
Ad- Aware ?.....When I looked that up it seemed to be an anti-virus as well...and I don't want that 'competing' with Norton.

Suggestions chaps ?....Or has something infiltrated the forum ?

Cheers - Phil

What browser are you using for your internet?  If you're using Firefox, there's an Add-On you can use called 'AdBlock Plus', which will stop any adverts on Youtube videos or Facebook, and also any advertising banners.  I don't know if it stops pop-ups, but there'll be an Add-On for that as well.

To get AdBlock for Firefox, click your 'Tools' button and then 'Add-ons'.  This will open your Add-on Manager.  At the top right should be a search box, so type 'AdBlock Plus' in there.  The top search result should be the latest version of AdBlock (currently 2.6.4).  Click the 'Install' button, and that's it, all done.  It makes a big difference to all those annoying 15 second adverts on YouTube and news sites as well.

I run Firefox with both Ad Block Plus and No Script and that seems to stop most of the stuff that is merely annoying in it's tracks. I rely on AVG to deal with the real nasties.

That said I run my PC pretty well tied down and it drives anyone else who uses it bananas with it's constant enquiries as to whether something they've never heard of should be allowed to do something they don't understand :)

AdBlock do a Pop-Up blocker as well, called 'Adblock Plus Pop-up Addon', currently on version 0.9.2.  That should take care of anything randomly appearing on your screen when you're browsing.  The bar down the left sounds more like a browser setting, so that would need disabling through your options.

Are you sure you didn't just forget to take your optivisor off?  :-\ :-\

Thank you, Peter ! :P
Seems by just going over to Firefox that the ads have gone....at the moment.
Norton seems to be blocking something called Yontoo every few minutes...Don't know whether that's managed to download itself on MSN.
What I found interesting was that I unplugged the phone line from the PC.....and Norton was STILL telling me that it had blocked this Yontoo 'whatever it is'.
Cheers - Phil. ......Just noticed the red underline spell checker isn't playing here at the moment......I'll get used to this machine soon. ;D ;D ;D

If it starts again search foe "tucows", you should be able to find a free or really cheap cleaner and pop up blocker there.

Yontoo is often stealthily downloaded alongside something you actually want, without you realising you've agreed to it. It may not be technically malware but if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck ....

Among other things it loads ads and redirects browser searches, I loathe it. It sounds like that may be at the root of your problems.

It's a pain to get rid of and sometimes hard to stop it reloading itself.

Sites like tucows and MajorGeeks (my favourite) are good source of software (often freeware) but may simply provide a bewildering array of incomprehensible tools to the non-geek.
