I was thinking of mixing some of the new republican romans (chopped up a bit and altered) with some from the old ranges to produce some Italian units (samnites, campanians etc). Does anyone know whether the 2 ranges are of similar proportions.

Thanks

I've not got any pics of them right next to each other, but they are both of a similar height and heft, so I don't think it would be a problem.  I'm not sure if any of the other members has mixed them before?

I'm going to order a couple of packs of the new republican romans to get me started. Any chance you can put some samples of the old range in the delivery so I can have a look?

Thanks

I'm curious about whether they've been any developments here.

Hi FK

yes there has. Leon has kindly sent me some samples along with an army of the new republican sculpts. Initial thoughts are yes some of them will work and probably look more like Italians than Romans (and some, particularly the Hastati look completely bonkers!). Phil's sculpts are much better but the old stuff may add some variety to make more Italian looking units.
I'll post painted pics in a couple of days (Pug permitting).

Of the old range the Hastati (ARP1) aren't the best sculpts with way too crazy helmet adornments for my liking and the Triari are in the kneeling position which I don't think is that suitable for the Italian allies. The Principes (ARP2) is probably the best fit shown below but still needed bit of a hair cut. I've painted them as Lucanians with an unpainted 'new' republican Roman figure which shows they're compatible in size. I may also mix in some of the marines.

Good mail effect there. Is the blue tunic based on any evidence? I've always understood that a deep blue was a very difficult dye to make, and faded fast.

conjecture and slight cock up on my part, should be red with blue border as per the rider on the Paestum wall art, some reason I inverted the design in my head. Although blue appears quite frequently.
