Apparently we're all supposed to change our passwords if we use the UK ebay (I think it's just the UK).
I've done it......though as I use different passwords for everything, I'm not quite sure what use my ebay account would be to anyone.

I suppose someone could pretend to be me and 'sell' stuff that would never arrive.  :-\

I spotted that one as well. It was all over FBook. I only ever use three different passwords so I've changed it anyway. I'd have to set set up a file with them all on otherwise.

Just did a very quick bit of checking.....Apparently it was 'compromised' sometime in February or March.
So why tell us now ?

They only just realised ...

So THAT's why I've bought so much stuff off eBay...

It's pretty outrageous that they took so long to get information out, but from the sounds of things it was an inside job as the hackers gained access via eBay employees login, and you can bet those login details were super encrypted...

Here the real question...Their stocks took a hit because the stock market believes that users will be nervous of using eBay, but does it put you off?

Personally I'm not bothered, ill still use it buy I may up my password changes from every 3 months to every month just to be extra safe!

Techno

So far....I've only bought a single item from them.....(A DVD box set)....But I will be a little bit wary when I come to order the 'next series'.

It's a very good idea to have a separate password for each site, but the only way to feasibly to do that is to have somewhere to store them all. There are programs and apps to do that, and they'll store them in an encrypted file, so that you only have to remember one password (the one that is used to encrypt the store). On Windows, I recommend Password Safe or Keepass. There are others, and there are similar apps for phones.

I don't use eBay much, but this won't affect how much I use it. There's no real competition, so who else would I use? Also, from what I've read, there's no evidence that they were incompetent, just unlucky.

I find a good old fashioned notebook does the job :P

Apparently this 'hack' affected e-bay.com too, not just the UK, but they told their users a few days earlier.

Cheers,

Kev

As long as you keep it somewhere safe. Bruce Schneier, a security expert, has long said that you could write some on a piece of paper kept in your wallet. His argument is that we're well used to keeping valuable bits of paper in our wallets  :)

Mine seem to get less valuable by the day. The ones with the queen's head on them, at least.
