ABOUT YOU

Name:
Joel

Location:
Durham, Land of the Prince Bishops

Do you have a pic?

Love that pic. It reminds me of one of the pics chavs take of themselves before putting them on Facebook!

PAYING FOR IT!

Current occupation:
I'm a Self-employed Decorator and I do a lot of Networking in the region.

What's the best job you've ever had?
This one! It's not always fab but I make decent cash and always find time for myself when I need to.  So if I'm quiet or if a job's finished before schedule I get to do geeky things with geeky friends before the wife gets in.

What would your ideal occupation be?
I always thought it would be working in a Games store... I was wrong. So, self-employed decorator is great.

GETTING INTO IT!

How did you get involved in wargaming?
My older brother was into wargaming.  It was a good way to be introduced as it wasn't, "Here's the rules", it was the story's, imagery and background of these miniatures that got me into it. That's kind of how it's always been since.

What was your first figure?
Well, Games Workshops 2nd Ed 40k, Abaddon and Karn the Betrayer. Both still on GW's shelf to the day.

Do you have a favourite period/genre?
For me, period games are difficult.  If you're going to do it, do it right: research, research and research.  Then find a set of rules that follow the doctrine of how the troops move and react, etc.  So Fantasy and Sci-Fi! But I am into Anglo-Zulu war and can't stop thinking of the Roman Britain.

How big is your figure collection?
Too big and yet not big enough.  I have about 100 strong GW 40k Sister of battle army and a Necromunda Orlock Gang.  Pendraken wise, I have 400ish Zulu models, 200 Fantasy Chaos and 100 Sci-Fi/Alien on order.  Plus around 1000 Doctor Who models (sculpted myself).

And how big is your unpainted lead mountain?
That's one harsh question, it's the question that a prosecutor asks just before your sentence... "Yes I plead guilty, my wife was right I could have waited!"  Only my Dr Who are done, but that's over 50%, so not bad going compared to some.

Do you have a favourite model in your collection?
Not really.  I like the look of whole armies/squads not really an individual kind of guy.  But if I had to pick one, my 10mm Tom Baker sculpt.  But I can't paint him because he's a master model, and I can't cast him till I've finished the whole set.

And do you have a pic?

What is the most important aspect of wargaming for you?
Me and my mate Dim_Reaper AKA Ant have a packet.  He's not allowed to go on and on about Matt Ward.  I'm not allowed to quote my commandments, the 3 F's.  The most important aspects of wargaming to me are: Is it FAIR to all player?  Is it FUN for all players?  Are you imagining the scene and generally getting into a game rather than getting bored?  And does it FEEL right, as in when you fire one unit at another or combat between troops, is the outcome realistic?  So for me that's what I like to come out of a game.

PLANNING IT

What project are you currently working on?
Just started rules and plans for Aliens.

And do you have any long-term projects on the go?
A few, but the main one is Doctor Who (http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php/topic,6028.120.html )  Leon, Luddite, Techno and a few others have been a big help. Especially Leon who sorted all the casting for me.  Thanks!

Do you have any wargaming influences?
Bad influences!  My mate Dim, we can be bad influences on each other actually.  We can't watch a film without saying... "Bet Pendraken have models that will...."

BUYING IT!

Do you buy scenery, or scratch build it?
Bit of both I suppose.  Pendraken's buildings and such are fab and I can't wait for the range to become even bigger.

Which wargaming websites do you visit regularly?
Pendraken forum.

If someone handed you £100 right now, what would you buy?
3D Alien/Space Hulk board from Ainsty Castings.  If you're talking Pendraken range... Aliens or Romans.

What has been your biggest one-off purchase?
I stupidly got myself a Thunderhawk gunship.  Any GW fan will say it's the thing you always dream of.  I got it, built it, painted it and then thought... "What do I do with it?"  All £600.00 of it sat on a shelf.  However, sold it on Ebay for around the same price!

PAINTING AND MODELLING IT!

How many hours a week do you paint?
Depends, if I have no work on I can easily spend 40 hours painting.

What kind of technique do you use?
I enjoy painted models, but I wouldn't say I enjoy painting models, so I do a factory line style painting.  I also like to get stuck in and get on with it.  My mate calls it rushing, but it ain't, I still spend the same hours on it, just that I get up at 7:00 and paint till 19:00.

Do you have a preferred brand of paint?
Army Painter Spray paint.  Black then a base coat.  It's awesome stuff.

Do you have a painting area? And do you have a pic?
At the moment... We did an extension last year when I was quiet with work.  We ran out of free cash so just closed the door.... I then moved a gaming table and such in.  However, unfortunately the recession ain't hitting me hard enough and we now have enough cash to finish it off.

Have you had any painting/modelling disasters?
Not really, I've blown the base of a model while too near the flock and I've drank from the brush water before.  But we've all done that... Haven't we?

Do you have any painting/modelling top tips?
Ok.  Pot, around 5% black paint, 5% black wash. 90% water. I Cover my finished models in it.

PLAYING WITH IT!

How often do you get to game?
Once every two weeks wargaming and once a month Roleplay.

Do you belong to a local club?
I don't need one... I have an amazing 5 person corner sofa, and a 2 person sofa arranged in a square, perfect for RolePlay.  I also have a 5x4ft board... For now.

Do you have a funny wargaming story?
Yeah, fat dwarf king on a throne had to roll a leadership check.  Always passes on a 10 or less.  He rolled 11 and tries to run but he can't waddle fast enough and gets chased down. Fat git!

And have you had any wargaming disasters?
Most games.

Do you prefer short games or long campaigns?
I do like games where your gang/armies gain experience and such or some joint storyline.

Do you have a wargames room? And do you have a pic?
See above.

How do you store your figures?
10mm, just a metal chocolate tin, that kind of thing.

READING ABOUT IT!

What are you reading at the moment?
Fifty shades of grey.... Not really.

Do you have a favourite book?
'Cybermen' by David Banks. A must-have for any Who fan.

Do you buy any wargaming magazines, and if so, which ones?
Nope, Internet has all the info I need.

WATCHING IT!

What are your 3 favourite films?
You can't have just 3! But, I dunno... Heat, Terminator 1 or 2, Aliens.

And your 3 worst?
Terminator 3, Alien 4, Mr beans Holiday.

What are your all-time Top 3 TV shows?
Doctor who (up to and including Baker II)
Red Dwarf (S1-6 only)
Star Trek Next Gen.

And right now?
Game of Thrones
Spartacus
The Hotel (love you Mark!)

LISTENING TO IT!

Who is your favourite band?
I have a few. Early Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Gang of Four, Rage Against the Machine, Young Knives, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, Long Blonds, Cindi Lauper.

And favourite album?
Pink Floyd's The Wall.

And your 3 favourite songs?
Impossible to answer.

NOT RELATED TO IT!

What other hobbies/pastimes do you enjoy?

I used to enjoy tinkering with my MGB-GT until mucking about under the bonnet became constant surgery under the bonnet... Piece of British made....

I also do a lot of Walking (around 20-30miles per week) with my Lab Toby and sometimes my wife or Dim_Reaper.

Finally (unless it counts as Wargames) RolePlay. At the moment, me Dim, Luddite and a few others meet up at my place once a month and are currently playing Cyberpunk 2020.

What do you drive?
Like most British people in the 1980's I stopped buying unreliable a got a D-reg MR2 MK1 TBar.

Are you a breast or thigh person...  ;)
My wife had both of these areas covered. I suppose out of the two though, breast.  But I also like ass!

And who are your Top 3 Totty?
Being married, I no longer have any sexual feelings outside of the marriage. (In fact I barely have any inside the marriage either!)

Do you have a favourite quote?
Yes.  In Doctor Who the master is made the offer from the Time Lords of a free and full pardon for all his crimes. He just looks at them and says, "What makes you think I want your forgiveness" cold!

If you could do anything, what would it be?
At the moment I really want to walk Hadrian's Wall.  84 miles in 5-6 Days.  I personally would just find a good summers week, grab the dog and a backpack, with a sleeping bag and sleep under the stars.  But I've been told that's a stupid idea.

Great intervieuw!

Vulpine

Hi all, thanks for the comments. I thought I would be more of a laugh, I see my self as quite funny (or is it funny looking?) but I blame the questions. If it was more free moving like Parkinson it would have been better ;)

Ill work through your comments...

SJ: 15 miles ain't that bad. Infact I do 15 miles once or twice in a week. But two days in a row? Now 6 days in a row? Very difficult and crap sleeping conditions and cleaning/toilets facility's.

Techno: Young..? Not that young, when I was young we had a 15inc Black and White TV upstairs and most houses round my way had an outside toilet still. Bit I dot remember rogue trader.

Barbarian: Produce em and ill buy. I'm just using medieval knights and Barbariens.

Herts: It's how old you are on the inside. Just finished doing a RPG with some younger lads. Yeah I do the "when I was young" talk also.

Gen: Yeah, it's an amazing album. Although I see it more of a journey than a list of songs. You can't set it on random.

Cap: One day, one day you will!

ML: Thanks mate!

PC: Yeah, dash of Wisky and a squeeze of lime in it. It's nice.

The repetitive distance isn't too bad, as long as you prep properly, and hope for good weather.  Me and Dave did Offa's Dyke back in 1997, which is 177 miles in 10 days.  We managed to catch the worst April that Wales had seen in decades, wading through chest high snow at times!  As long as you can wash and dry your feet each night, and put a fresh pair of socks on, you feel a lot better!

Well I'm planning a 22 ish mile walk at the moment for one day this week.

It's Ushawmoor - Bearpark - Nevilscross Durham (as in the battle of Nevilscross) - Eshwining - Waterhouses - Lanchester - Langly park - Bearpark - Ushawmoor.

It's like a big circle around my house. Kinda good so if it goes wrong or you run out of energy you can just head back. Toby will love it!
