I hosted a game with some mates at my house yesterday. We played AVBCW game using IABSM which was great fun. The basic scenario was as follows.

A train loaded with arms and munitions for the British Union of Fascists militia has been intercepted by a strong force of the Social Workers Army. The cargo had been already loaded on trucks when the surprise attack drove off the BUF escort. However, one enterprising BUF officer managed to sabotage the vehicles’ fuel tanks before retreating. At the local BUF HQ a force has been rapidly mobilised to retake the train and the BUF commander has called on the nearest Regular Army garrison for help.

With no immediate access to more fuel, the SWA are unable to remove their booty before the enemy return. In desperation they have been force to appeal to the aristocracy and beg the Cliveden Brigade to supply them with fuel.

The SWA forces start deployed on the table, they may be concealed.

The Cliveden Brigade enter at the Eastern Road at the 4th draw of the reinforcement card. Once the fuel truck reaches the SWA a Special Event card will be added to the deck. Each time it is drawn one truck is refueled and may move.

The BUF deploy along the Southern table edge within 15” of the road at the start of the game.

The Regular Army enter at the Western Road at the 3rd draw of the reinforcement card..

Terrain.
The hedges are impassable to wheeled vehicles except at gaps and gates.

Hedges with mixed trees are especially thick and high, costing 2 actions to cross and blocking line of sight.

The game started well for the rebels, as their reinforcements card had come out 3 times before the Royalists got their first reinforcements card. Despite heavy losses the SWA kept the fascists back until the fuel got to the train station. The regular army finally turned up, just as the first laden truck moved off.

It looked like an easy win for the rebels, but just as the first truck was almost off the table the breakdown card was drawn and on a randon dice throw, it was immobilised. The second truck was now underway, until the PanzerII put some 20mm rounds through the cab and blew it's engine out.

Now that the regulars were clearing the village and flanking the Clivden Brigade's position, we decided that was a win for the Royalists.

I'll add piccies later.

Here's some piccies ;)

The objective.

BUF militia advancing supported by some of their "advisors".

Socialist militia with a 75mm field gun. A bit of a shock for the fascists!

The fuel truck arrives with escort.

The regulars arrive, better late than never!

Techno

Looks like grand fun !!

Very cool!

Some of the guys at Plymouth Association of Wargamers are going to do VBCW in 15mm, mainly because we have peices already that could be used.

I am building a BUF force using Peter Pig SCW Nationalists, a couple of Pz1 and 11s, some Bren Carriers and trucks.  A BUF flying column!

Very nice! I'm building up Pendraken AVBCW forces for LDV and Socialists, hoping to add BUF and Anglican League soon. Good to see how others do it. Thanks for sharing.  :)

So did the rules work well?  Did they feel right for the period etc?

What far4ngn said. Did you use bases as replacements for single figures? How about big men? I'd like to see what troops you used and their organisation, as well as the cards you used. Very handy.

I'll let you leave the interrogation table now  :D.

We thought the rules worked well for the period.

I'm really busy for the next few days but will give some feedback and answer your questions as soon as I get the time.

Also could I get away with figures based for BKC II and use them with these rules?  Thinking of large scale and small scale skirmish without having to rebase :)

Chris on this Forum uses his existing BKCII bases for IABSM. I think all he has had to do is add in some smaller scale stuff such as 2" mortars, individual PIAT stands etc.

sunjester

As I said I really like IABSM and feel they work really well for the period. That said I have also tried BKC and been pleased with the result. For a comparison of the two rules systems see
http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php/topic,6013.0.html

All my 10mm troops are based on 30mm frontage bases, 30mm square for infantry, support weapons etc, 30x40 or 30x50 for vehicles. 3-4 infantry, 1 weapon & crew or 1 vehicle per base.

The reason for this is that my original armies were 15mm Peter Pig armies for PBI and AK47. When we started using BKC 30mm became the standard base size at my club, and we carried that over to out 10mm stuff.

For IABSM I use 2 bases to represent an 8 man  section, using very small diddy dice to keep a track of casualties, remove a stand after losing 4 men. I’ve based Big Men as single figures on pennies, each base has a small rock with a number painted on it to identify them.

I’m using a standard deck (axis cards for the Royalists/BUF and  Allied cards for the Anti-fascists), with all the bad optional cards, Hesitant Troops, Hesitant Commander, Vehicle Breakdown and Poor Fire Discipline, which I think represents the amatuer nature of the VBCW. I have experimented with using a special event card, which represents a Broken Machine Gun. If the next card drawn is a unit with a mg of any sort, one of them is out of action for the rest of the game, but I’ll be limiting that to Militia units in future.
I’m working on a few ideas for extra cards, such as weapon jam and vehicle puncture, plus borrowing other ideas I found on the web, for minor irritations which will only last for the current turn. I will also be designing some unit cards exclusively for the Socialist forces so I can try a three-way game sometime.

So far my planned factions are
Windsor garrison of Royalist Army and Slough BUF (with supporting units of the King’s German Legion)
The Cliveden Democracy Brigade
Maidenhead and District People’s Popular Collective, Socialist Worker’s Army
