At Triples recently I picked up some hills from S&A scenics. They're nicely made - gentle slopes that mean your troops stay where you put them and the flock is a perfect match for my gaming mat. The only drawback was that I couldn't help thinking "bloody golf course" every time I put them on the table. I know there's always going to be a trade-off between aesthetics and playability, but these just looked too well tended.
Anyway, I experimented with one of the smaller hills, gluing on patches of sand and fine cat litter with dilute PVA. When this was dry I sealed it with Woodland Scenics Scenic Cement before painting the patches my usual ground colour (Winsor & Newton Yellow Ochre and Buff Titanium). I finished it off with a few MiniNatur tufts and some small patches of Woodland Scenics clump foliage. The finished hill looks pretty good and, most importantly, isn't too fiddly to actually play with. The others are now undergoing the same treatment. Pix to follow.
