ABOUT YOU

Name:
Enrique Ballesteros

Location:
Madrid â€" Spain

Do you have a pic?

;)

=O
Obviously not me, but I'm close to being like this venerable old man.

PAYING FOR IT!

Current occupation:
Sales manager

What’s the best job you've ever had?
Consultant

What would your ideal occupation be?
That is easy, millionaire.

GETTING INTO IT!

How did you get involved in wargaming?
I almost do not remember, I started in this wonderful hobby over 40 years ago. At the hobby-shop where I used to buy my TAMIYA scale models, one day I saw a diorama of a battle and from there began my interest for wargames.

What was your first figure?
TAMIYA Afrika Korps infantry.

Do you have a favourite period/genre?
Not exactly but if I had to decide, I am very interested in the Pike and Shot period.

How big is your figure collection?
It's really a huge collection, covering many periods / genres and scales (6mm, 10mm, 15mm, 20mm, 25mm, 28mm). I would not be able to count the number of miniatures that I have (painted and unpainted). Thousands, for sure.

And how big is your unpainted lead mountain?
Approximately 40% of miniatures that I have. Thinking carefully that means I have a lot of painted miniatures.

Do you have a favourite model in your collection? And do you have a pic?
Yes, my favorite miniature is always the last one I have painted. I take the same care with all of them when I am painting, but there are some dioramas I like in a special way, once I have finished them.

What is the most important aspect of wargaming for you?
Sharing pleasant moments with friends and, of course, drinking beer during and after games.

PLANNING IT

What project are you currently working on?
I'm not someone who has a single project, I'm working on several at once.
28mm Necromunda Escher Band, 10mm SciFi Marines and Aliens/Bugs, 6mm EPIC Orks.
And of course I have many more that are not yet started but I have already purchased miniatures for.

And do you have any long-term projects on the go?
Peninsula Napoleonic Army, when I have enough time for it.

Do you have any wargaming influences?
Certainly, I am very easily influenced by this hobby.  I enjoy seeing miniatures painted by other players / artists and I always learn something from all of them.

BUYING IT!

Do you buy scenery, or scratch build it?
On very rare occasions I have bought scenery, but I usually try to scratch build it by myself.

Which figure range is at the top of your request list?
At the moment I am very interested in 10mm Renaissance / 18th Century and Napoleonic ranges.

Which individual item is at the top of your request list?
I could not say.

Which wargaming websites do you visit regularly?
Daily, two English forums, Pendraken & Specialist Games; and also two Spanish forums, La Armada and Warmaster Acolytes.

If someone handed you £100 right now, what would you buy?
£100 means a lot of 10mm Pendraken miniatures.  Probably SYW/Marlburian references.

What has been your biggest one-off purchase?
Generally my purchases are not of much value, I prefer to make small purchases rather than one large one.

PAINTING AND MODELLING IT!

How many hours a week do you paint?
I try to paint a couple of hours every day. The weekly average should be about 15 hours.

What kind of technique do you use?
Each scale requires its own technique.
For 10mm scale miniatures, I try to paint batches of 15 figures, minimum, at once.  I begin with black undercoat, then basic colours and one or two highlights and finally matt varnish.

Do you have a preferred brand of paint?
No doubt, the range of Vallejo paints.

Do you have a painting area?  And do you have a pic?
I have a small painting area, but it is enough for my needs.

Have you had any painting/modelling disasters?
Well, this is a little secret.  I'm colorblind and once I painted green horses until my wife warned me about it.

Do you have any painting/modelling top tips?
Do not sit down and paint if you do not think you'll have a couple of hours to do it in a relaxed and quiet way.

PLAYING WITH IT!

How often do you get to game?
I try to play every week.

Do you belong to a local club?
No, but I have some great friends with whom I can play on a regular basis without the need to belong to a club.

Do you have a funny wargaming story?
I enjoy when I play and I remember laughing lot in some games, but now would be unable to explain the reasons that triggered the attacks of laughter!

And have you had any wargaming disasters?
Each game there is something that it is wrong, but nothing that can be considered a disaster.

Do you prefer short games or long campaigns?
I like to play campaigns which include several short games of no more than 3 or 4 hours.

How do you store your figures?
In different types and sizes of boxes with foam, tons of foam.

READING ABOUT IT!

What are you reading at the moment?
Bernard Cornwell â€" The Saxon Stories (6 titles)

Do you have a favourite book?
Not only one, I have dozens of favorite books.

Do you buy any wargaming magazines, and if so, which ones?
I only read occasionally Wargames Illustrated.

WATCHING IT!

What are your 3 favourite films?
Only three, that's impossible.

And your 3 worst?
It is also impossible, as I tend to forget the bad movie titles.

What are your all-time Top 3 TV shows?
I usually do not watch TV…

And right now?
… but I liked very much the TV version of the book Game of Thrones.

LISTENING TO IT!

Who is your favourite band?
I love music, but I would not be able to choose a style or a band out of them all.
The Corrs / Genesis / Fleetwood Mac / Lighthouse Family / The Cars / ...

And favourite album?
There is not enough space for listing all of them.

And your 3 favourite songs?
Not my 3 favourite songs as there are hundreds, but 3 of them

well lets say another 3

it all depends on the moment.

NOT RELATED TO IT!

What other hobbies/pastimes do you enjoy?
Photography

What do you drive?
Aston Martin Rapide,… but only in my dreams.

Are you a breast or thigh person...  ;)
Can I choose both?  ;) ;D

And who are your Top 3 Totty?
:o :o :o
Do you know my wife can get to read this ?

Do you have a favourite quote?
"The only battles that are won running away, are against women.", Napoleon Bonaparte.

If you could do anything, what would it be?
Put the clock of my life back 25 years, but keep the memory of everything lived so far. :d :d

Interesting.

You seem very, experienced in painting.
BTW, those Tamiya 1/35 troops look really really familiar. In fact I still have some Americans.  ;)

No top 3 totty? (I wouldn't have any either).

I need to buy some vallejo paints.  :D

May I ask...

What rules are the miniatures in that city for? (It looks fantastic)
What manufacturer?
How did you scratch build the buildings???
And a lot of other random ****.
I will stand, or I will fall. But I will not sit.

Some really nice minis there 8).

Leveller Mutineer

Some nice painting there.

Know what you mean about being colour blind.  I have to make sure that all my pots are clearly labelled.

Hertsblue

Hugely impressive pictures, Enrique. Particularly the urban terrain. You must do a tutorial some time.  =D>
When you realise we're all mad, life makes a lot more sense.

Good interview and impressive brushwork.  I like the twin lights on your painting desk - something  I'll certainly be adding to my own work area.

Miniatures in the city are 6mm and used for EPIC rules (Games Workshop), and yes, the rules are fantastic.
The administrative buildings are from Forgeworld and are actually out of production. There are also some administrative buildings from the sprues sold by Games Workshop (also OOP) adding items to simulate rubble.
The industrial buildings are completely scratch build.

Thank you Hertsblue, glad you like the urban terrain, since it is the largest piece of modular scenery I have ever made.

Belive me, it is not needed a tutorial. The urban terrain is only foamcore with cutouts to simulate soil plates and then some paint and pigments. Explosion crates are made with putty.
