I like the idea of a removable insert bearing the gravestones. Was the size of the model dictated by the ground area by any chance?

My ground scale gives a size of 18mm x 18mm (see Post 110). To get any figures within the walls, I had to enlarge the model to accommodate a 25mm square base.

Ah, yes, it's the old ground-scale versus figure-scale conundrum again.  :-\

Yes, especially something to resolve when it comes to specific pieces rather than area terrain. Got some more of those 'features' in my present project... And especially hard if you're also trying to get as many kilometres as you can on your tabletop!

Wouldn't worry too much about the size, it looks great!

You could always treat the bigger size as the cemitery+ the ground covered when defe, ding the walls.

That's true, sometimes barricades and defences would be built around an existing structure. The important thing, I think, is to know how many bases are afforded what cover. And the cemetery at Essling, I think, has to accommodate at least one base. It would be quite believable that the cemetery was manned by voltigeurs sent out ahead of the main body of the division while the division's grenadiers and carabiniers were grouped together in the more substantial buildings back at Essling. I plan to have open order bases/markers and if the cemetery model accommodates just one of these, I think that would be realistic enough. Therefore, the defensive position would be able to give hard cover to one skirmish base (150 men) but not half a standard battalion (300 men) as in the photo of the grenadiers (which is what one close order infantry base would represent).

Sorry about the length of that  :)  jus' thinking out loud  ;D

That's worked rather well.
My officers usually end up ahead on my big bases, it looks cooler.

Yeah, I'd like to do more bases like this. But quite a few officer figures have swords that would stick out ahead of the base.
