This is why the French lost so few eagles in the Peninsula, not because they weren't well beaten - they were - but because the eagles weren't there to capture.

How many did they ever actually loose? I know the 4th lost one in 1805 and the British captured five. I can trace 13 lost ones via Wikipedia, are there more? Were they really the trouble magnet everyone plays them as?  :-\

I think the French tended to regard them as the soul of the regiment and therefore hostages to fortune. Capture of an enemy colour would pretty well guarantee you a field promotion in most armies - it was something tangible to show off back home. Whether the capture of an eagle would dishearten a unit or make it more determined to get it back is something that can be debated to the end of time.

Just the Line Regiments:
1805: 2
1807: 4 and 1 standard
1809: 3 and 1 standard
    Martinique and Guadeloupe: 5
1812: 4 in Russian campaign
    7 in Peninsular campaign
1813: 8
1814: 3
1815: 2 (one of which is here in Edinburgh!) - if Waterloo had been the battle of the standards, Napoleon would have won!

That probably applies equally to the Peninsula. The main criterion however is not how many standards were lost, but how many units were broken. I suspect that would reverse the tally quite significantly.

Am I the only one who finds the gold-on-pale-background pretty well unreadable? The flags themselves are very good.
