Nice work.
Shell explosions always add something to a base.
I often spray a large blob of cotton wool black, break it up into smaller blobs, base it, then stretch it so the white shows, spray that with varnish and it will set it nicely as an explosion.

Can I suggest aquarium floss as a better substitute for cotton wool? Much more "wispy".

Never tried that. I use various grades of wire wool. Good starting colour and holds its shape.

I agree. I tried to avoid quoting the catalogue: "Dead horse markers". Perhaps could be changed to "Horse Casualty Marker x 5"?
