Pike and Shotte- doing the ECW in 10mm.

Naturally having picked up Pike and Shotte by Warlord Games at Salute Im now itching to start a ECW project in 10mm. Ive already got a 15mm unpainted Montrose force that Ive never been happy with models wise, so this is a good opportunity to ditch it and start again at a proper scale!
Im planning on basing the forces on 20mm square bases, 4 men to a base. So a pike block will be 4 bases (16 men) and the musket wings will be 2 bases each with 4 men on a base. Should be a nice compact army. Do you guys think that would look OK, and not too light on miniatures? It fits scale wise for Pike and Shotte almost perfectly as I plan to play it at half movement/shooting scale and the frontage of my units are exactly half what they recommend for 28mm.
Typical the main Pendraken page is down coz Im desperate to start planning purchases!

I've just been thinking about basing for Maurice, for slightly later era armies, and have decided on 1" square bases (25 mm). I had thought about 20mm square ones, with the same number of figures you are thinking of, but they are quite small and will probably slide around a bit. On 1" bases I was thinking 6 figures (2 ranks of 3), or 3 cavalry for standard line regiments or just 2 for lights.
I assume Pike and Shotte is fairly free and easy on basing like Hail Caesar? If so I would have a think about any other rules you may want to use the figures for and try to have basing that is compatible with them if at all possible.

I think 20mm square bases should work well Chris.

I am using same overall size, but am basing 20 pike on a single 40x40 base and 10 musket on 40x20

Yeah Fred very much the same approach as Hail Caesar and Black Powder when it comes to basing conventions. I think I am going to stick with the original idea but with the possibility of increasing the size of a unit from 4 to 6 bases with a 3 base frontage once Ive got both sides, Parliament and Royalist ready for the table. That way I will have playable forces and then can increase them for the look at a later date.

Thats the other idea I have been toying with, but then I guess it would be hard to put them into column. Then again I guess you can always put a counter next to them or something, and how often will they need to be in column...
Hmm you got me thinking now!

Got my P&S copy yesterday, I'm going with Pike on 40x40, shotte on 40x20 which (even though in P&S they are classed as separate units) will give me the same frontage for a Pike and Shotte block as Warmaster. Not sure about cav yet maybe 40x40 also or 80x40hmm
All measurements in cms at first to see how it plays.Table size 4' x 4'. ah the joys of measurements bases in millimeters and table sizes in feet

Or you could just play on a 121.92cm square table!

Had first game of P&S in 10mm last night These are the base sizes that appeared to work best :-
Standard shotte 40 X 20
Large shotte 80 x 20
Standard Pike 40 X 40
Large Pike 60 X 40
Cav 60 X 40
All measurements during game using centimeters.
'And by eck it where a reet good game.'
Just putting together shopping list for finishing my Parliament army, and putting together my Royalist and Scot Covenant, all Pendraken of course

That looks about what I want to use for basing. How many figures per base though? Ive also been considering doing the 30YW instead of the ECW (long story involving my gaming group having quite a lot of horrid 15mm ECW figs and playing Warhammer ECW)

The broad bases (80x20 and 60x20) won't allow for proper column formation (page 27), for 'bending' units around small woods or wall angles (page 37) or for easy placing inside buildings (page 42), so I would advise against them.
The 20x20 format suggested by some seems to me to be too fidgety for pikes. You would finish Naseby with a lot of bent pikes as well as bent Royals.
Just my 2 cents.
Cheers,
Aart

First off, no 60 x 20 bases
Secondly, all units are made up of 40 x 20 bases (even though we've made them into one base for our games) so if you want you can magnetic base stands to form unit so if you need column you could separate them and re arrange as required. Ive found by basing on 40x20's, armies can be used for different systems. We've found that column only use for the pre able to the battle so quite easy to use a marker to say what formation the units in, anywhere near the action in column and your buggered
All units pictured here for use with Hail Caesar:-

are on magnetic bases so if formation change required we just separated and rearrange The size of the units where 120 x 40 (big) and movement and formation change no probs.

Thanks for clearing that up.
By the way, in BP-related games I always have my troops enter the battlefield in column so they get the 'free move' if necessary. If you don't, you can run into horrible trouble.
Cheers,
