Honestly if that’s all the personalities that you’re going to cover I would be much happier if you just did a bunch of generic commanders. You can never have too many commanders and I think you would sell packs more that way. What does everyone else think?

Wow, this is great news!  I am glad to see the range expanded but also happy that you are keeping the old range as well.   The old range infantry is very good.  I also liked the variety of the command groups.

My one request is to take care with the scale proportions between the artillery guns and crew.  Too often in 10mm, the artillery guns and carriages are way too small compared to the crewmen.  IIRC, the wheels of the standard artillery carriage was right at 5 feet 7 inches tall.  Again IIRC, most of the artillery (6, 12, 10pdrs) used the same artillery carriage. The top of the wheels would be as tall as many of the crewmen.

If we were to do 4 General's for each side, which would people prefer?  (Union - 2 east/2 west and Confed - 2 east/2 west?)

I'll have to check on this, as I think the carriage in the FPW range is the same, so we'll just be doing new barrels for some of the guns.

So far, Langton Miniatures ang GHQ do the best 10mm acw guns, cosidering size.
Look at the proportions at my blog:

It would be nice to get the same size guns from Pendraken.

Nice photos and definitely better scaled than most 10mm Artillery/crewmen.  But if you notice, the crewmens chins are at the same height as the top of the gun wheels.  So the chin height matches the heigth of the wheels at 5'7" and then you add approximately 10" for the height of the head, those crewmen have to be at least 6'5" tall.  They would make an impressibly tall basketball team even today.   Or the crewmen are average heights and the guns are scaled too small to the crewmen.   :-\

If I remember correctly, the average height during the ACW was somewhere around 5'10".  So basically, the top of the head of the "average" crewmen would only be about 3 inches taller than the top of the wheel of the common artillery carriage.

Still an opportunity to be the one company that realistically scales their 10mm artillery to the crewmen...   :)

The 5'7" height is off the top of my head.  I know I looked up the information and found reputable information on the internet about a year ago.  The 5'7" sticks in my mind.  I am trying to relocate the site tonight but if may take a couple searches to find it.

If anyone lives near a ACW national park battlefield, you can probably go out an measure the wheel height.  Anyone near Gettysburg?  I know they had quite a few guns scattered about.

Jagger

No luck finding the original site yet but I have found a couple of non-specific references which are using 57 inches for wheel height rather than 5'7".   If so, then the wheel height of 57" would be a height of 4'9".  If correct, then the photos linked to by Maciek would be about right.  I have also looked at a couple of ACW photos and drawings and I suspect the 4'9" or 57 inches is probably correct.  I will keep looking to see if I can find something more concrete to the 6,12 and 10 pounders.

Here is a nice photo but not sure of the specific gun...the barrel looks small.' All the crewmen are taller than the wheel height.

At the moment, it seems my memory converted 57 inches into 5'7"...weird how that happens more and more the older you get.    ~X(

Jagger

Ok, looks like it is pretty concrete that the height was 57".   So Maciek's link gives a pretty good idea of the scale of artillery to crew proportion.  Here is a link, information about half way down; http://www.civilwarartillery.com/books/RobertsHandBookofArtillery.htm#P12ArtCarMach

From "The Hand-book of Artillery, for the Service of the United States, Army and Militia. With the Manual of Heavy Artillery, Including that of the New Iron Carriage"

By Joseph Robert, Major, 4TH Regt. Art., U.S.A., and Colonel ed Penn. Art.

Fifth Edition, Revised and Greatly Enlarged. New York: D. Van Nostrand, 192 Broadway, 1863.

How many kinds of wheels are employed for field carriages?
Two: No. 1 for the 6-pdr. gun-carriage, the Caisson, the forge, the battery-wagon, and for the limbers of all field carriages. No.2 for the 24 and 32-pdr. Howitzer and the 12-pdr. Gun-carriages.

In what respects are these wheels similar ?
They are of the same form and height, and they fit on the same axle-tree arm. The height is 57 inches, and each wheel is composed of 14 spokes and 7 fellies.

How do they differ?
In the dimensions of their parts, and in strength and weight.

What is the weight of these?
No. 1, 180 lbs.; No. 2, 196 lbs.

maciek

Quote... the photos linked to by Maciek would be about right.

QuoteSo Maciek's link gives a pretty good idea of the scale of artillery to crew proportion.

Having crewed one at one time the wheels are big and the sound is bigger :D :D :D
oh and you want to feel the concussion wave when you are advancing towards one of the buggers,   :-SS :-SS :-SS
Sometimes I wonder - why is that frisbee geting bigger - and then it hits me!

You're going to need to provide 6pdrs for the early years of the war, especially in the western theatre as an awful lot were used in the first two years, whereas gatling guns etc hardly saw the light of day. I'm not saying don't do gatlings, but rather the 6pdr is a much higher priority for a complete range.

Jagger

There were a lot of 6 pdrs at Shiloh.  I would imagine the same at Bull Run, Peninsula and Antietam.

Leon

I'll make a note on the 6pdrs, and we'll see what we can get done when it comes round to the artillery.

Quick query folks, which extra Generals would be preferred?  The designer has just done the 4 originally listed, so we want to add another 4.

:-\

We'll have some Mounted Staff Officers, and can also look at doing some Generic General-y types if needed.
