ABOUT YOU

Name:
Paul (aka Nosher)

Location:
Sunny Suffolk – originally from Scarborough.

Do you have a pic?

PAYING FOR IT!

Current occupation:
Youth Work Manager/Cricket Coach

What’s the best job you've ever had?
Armed Forces

What would your ideal occupation be?
Full-Time Cricket Coach

GETTING INTO IT!

How did you get involved in wargaming?
Dad tipped up home on leave with a box of 1/32nd Scale British Paratroopers under his arm as a present in the early 70’s. I spent the entire weekend creating a trench system in the cabbage patch and then pelting the new plastics with pebbles, lumps of mud and finally house bricks. Dad spent almost his entire leave period sifting the patch for plastic soldiers…

What was your first figure?

Do you have a favourite period/genre?
Not really – I am a complete ‘Wargaming Whore’ and will flit from period to period and from scale to scale with astonishing regularity. My mainstays would be WW2, Medieval and Pike and Shot games.

I will play most periods/genres but draw the line at RPG games as I get really uncomfortable around people pretending to be Wizards/Elves/Paladins…

How big is your figure collection?
From my perspective too small – there is always something else I need. From my wife’s perspective too large – why do you need more? Why do you need more shoes dear?

And how big is your unpainted lead mountain?
Not quite as big as K2 but bigger than Ben Nevis.

Do you have a favourite model in your collection? And do you have a pic?
That’s a really good question! I have some Langton Napoleonic ships that rarely see the light of day which are treasured possessions but they are packed away in a dust free environment as an investment for the future.

What is the most important aspect of wargaming for you?
Being a predominantly solo-gamer it would have to be time spent on my own bunging dice at my favourite rule sets without any interference from real-life. Escapism – pure and simple.

When I do get to game against a real opponent it’s the Anglo-Saxon banter and gentlemanly insults that are flung between good friends at every table top disastrous dice throw or catastrophic event that sends your best laid plans flying out of the window.

PLANNING IT

What project are you currently working on?
I’m tackling my 10mm Medieval/WoTR mountain and other 10mm goodies including Ayuubid Egyptians and Crusaders.

And do you have any long-term projects on the go?
I’m currently awaiting the release of FoG Napoleonic’s so am planning to build French, Austrian and Russian armies that can double up for Black Powder and Lasalle.

Do you have any wargaming influences?
My first inspiration was a library book by Gavin Lyall called Operation Warboard which inspired a whole hearted launch into proper wargaming using Airfix 1/72nd scale kits with polystyrene layered hills and cocktail stick trees…. I had that book out on my library ticket for three whole years without anyone asking me to bring it in so someone else could borrow it! When I did eventually have to take it in I then took it back out a fortnight later.

BUYING IT!

Do you buy scenery, or scratch build it?
Buy every time – haven’t got the skills or the patience to scratch build stuff.

Which figure range is at the top of your request list?
For the first time in some time I don’t really have a list of things I want/need. I’m looking at 10mm Naps for 2012 but haven’t quite settled on a range. I am looking forward to Pendraken releasing a Falklands Range.

Which individual item is at the top of your request list?
A one to one scale Mila Jovovich Resident Evil model... Smiley

Which wargaming websites do you visit regularly?
Pendraken Forum/Store, Specialist Military Publishing, FoG Forum, SAGA Forum, HC Yahoo Group, loads of others

If someone handed you £100 right now, what would you buy?
I’d put it towards the family’s Christmas plans.

What has been your biggest one-off purchase?
Wargaming wise it would have to be the Langton’s Ships that I bought a number of years ago. I had them pro-painted, rigged and based and this cost more than I am prepared to publicly announce for fear of immediate divorce papers being issued.

PAINTING AND MODELLING IT!

How many hours a week do you paint?
Depends on my mood – some weeks it’s as little as nothing and other weeks I can paint like a man possessed. I’m currently in ‘can’t be arsed’ mode as I am up to my neck in work at the moment.

What kind of technique do you use?
Depends upon what I am painting but for 10mm everything is based first. Undercoated in black, block painting, highlights, wash, tart bases up, flock and then matt spray varnish.

Do you have a preferred brand of paint?
Mainly use GW paints as I have a store on my doorstep however have begun a switchover to Vallejo now it’s stocked by Pendraken as it almost twice as much cheaper for twice as much paint!

Do you have a painting area?  And do you have a pic?
Not really. I paint in the dining room that way I can still speak to other humans and have the TV/Stereo on as background noise.

Have you had any painting/modelling disasters?
I frequently drop figures into my basing material pots but no, no major disasters that I can immediately recall.

PLAYING WITH IT!

How often do you get to game?
Being primarily a solo gamer I try to get in at least one game a fortnight – usually on a Friday evening with a few beers with Sky Sports as a backdrop.

Do you belong to a local club?
My nearest club is quite some way away and meets Friday evenings. In some respects I enjoy the occasional club night but I do like to be close to my family at weekends so find myself torn between home and club.

And have you had any wargaming disasters?
When stationed in Germany I attended the annual JHQ Rheindalen Wargames show with a couple of mates. A whole weekend event where those that travelled from far afield could kip at the venue, my mates car boot was packed to the gunnels with yellow handbags and maggots (sleeping bags). I had insisted in taken my latest wargaming acquisition – a superbly painted collection of Man of War ships along which were crammed into the boot of the car alongside lots of essentials such as beer and more beer.

On the way to the show we had a car accident and my collection was dashed to pieces amongst the beer crates and also waterlogged with three or four litres of beer from bottles which had not survived the impact.

Do you prefer short games or long campaigns?
Short games – haven’t got the space or capacity to set up all dayers or leave stuff out for weeks on end.

Do you have a wargames room?
Sadly not, and if I did with four kids I doubt it would be wise to have one until they have flown the coop!

How do you store your figures?
In file boxes under the bed which is a bloody nightmare!

READING ABOUT IT!

What are you reading at the moment?
Viz/FHM

Do you have a favourite book?
Not really – if pushed it would be one of my prized Wisdens.

Do you buy any wargaming magazines, and if so, which ones?
Haven’t bought a wargames magazine in years although I did write regular contributions and batreps for MW in the 90’s

WATCHING IT!

What are your 3 favourite films?
Alien, A Bridge Too Far, Trainspotting

And your 3 worst?
Lord of the Rings, The Pacific, Mary Poppins

What are your all-time Top 3 TV shows?
Don’t really watch much TV other than sport so it would probably be Sky Sports 1, 2 & 3

LISTENING TO IT!

Who is your favourite band?
Madness

And favourite album?
Legend – Bob Marley

And your 3 favourite songs?
Bob Marley – One Love (it’s been my ring tone for nearly ten years)
The Jam – Town Called Malice
Happy Mondays – Step On

NOT RELATED TO IT!

What other hobbies/pastimes do you enjoy?
Cricket takes up most of my spare time now. I don’t play much now (mainly indoor cricket when I do play). I coach two U13 Boys teams at my local club and the County U13 Girls Squad. I’m a fair-weather golfer and love my Rugby League.

My third passion is food and drink – of which I indulge in both far too much!

What do you drive?
My wife and kids up the wall…. and a clapped out old banger.

Are you a breast or thigh person...  Wink
100% puppies man although I’m also partial to a generous derriere. I prefer to see things covered up – leaves more to the imagination.

And who are your Top 3 Totty?
Sharleen Spiteri, Louise Redknapp and Mia Wazikowska

http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php/topic,1714.0.html

Do you have a favourite quote?
My favourite serious quote:
“He who rejects change is the architect of decay. The only human institution which rejects progress is the cemetery”. Harold Wilson

The funniest quote I came across most recently:

If you could do anything, what would it be?
Spend the rest of my life on a Caribbean beach drinking Morgan’s whilst being served Jerk Chicken and fresh fruit whilst staring aimlessly out to sea.

Friday nights are just not the same without Superleague Sad

Keighley Cougars fan (my old man played for them in the 60's) and remember the heady days of the 90's when Phil Larder and Daryl Powell were bossing the league and got us promoted to Superleague only for the league to prevent us going up due to ground capacity/safety Angry

Saw on the news the other day that Northampton Saints are fileding a League team in the Championship in 2013 which is great news as I might get to see a live game or two a year!

Already done that one in 30mm scale.....But as I didn't trust the people who asked me to do it.....It never went into production...'Cos I didn't send it off...And Eff knows where the green is now.....Buried (never to be retrieved) in one of my 'junk' boxes...And NO...I'm NOT going to look for it !

Greetings Nosher, been meaning to reply to this for a while,

Keighley Cougars fan (my old man played for them in the 60's) and remember the heady days of the 90's when Phil Larder and Daryl Powell were bossing the league and got us promoted to Superleague only for the league to prevent us going up due to ground capacity/safety Angry

Northampton getting a semi-pro outfit is indeed great news. Also has a tinge of frustration for me. My lads’ club Nottingham Outlaws were offered the job first but turned it down because of lack of funds.

I know what you mean Sky just doesn’t seem worth the money without it, especially as Spartacus and the Borgia’s are also finished.

Not like watching it live but my eldest who is a stand-off looks at this for inspiration. It is all good but phenomenal around the 5mins point.

It'll be nice to see the first Welsh derby match for over a century next season.  Thumbs up
