The world's biggest model airport has gone on display after six years of development and construction â€" at a staggering cost of just over £3m.

Called Knuffingen Airport, the pricey model is based on Hamburg's international airport and is about 40 times smaller than the original.

The incredibly detailed model can be seen in Germany's Miniatur Wunderland, a place which is also home to the world's largest miniature railroad landscape.

Objects featured in the model include 40 aircraft that can take off and land, 90 vehicles on the runway, 40,000 lights and 15,000 figurines. The vehicles and figurines can move thanks to an innovative computer system, and the planes can 'fly' thanks to wire connections.

Their site indicates that it's all 1:87 (i.e. HO model railroad scale).
