Has anyone adopted the new technology yet ? what do you think ?  Whilst i'm gadget man and quite impressed by the e-ink technology in Kindles/E-readers i'm still not sure i want to swap my nice books for a lump of plastic. If you do use them are there any good resources for military books ?

Got a Kindle a month or so ago, and must say I like it.

Searching on Amazon you can find a lot of free books, some military history. They rotate what's free, so you need to keep looking. Other books cost from 79p to almost print price.

Another big resource is: http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page takes a bit of searching though.

Also, google for free e-books and you'll find loads of sites, again, the free books sometimes take a little digging.

If you want to try without getting a Kindle, I believe you can get free software from Amazon to read Kindle books on your pc, or you could just get the e-books as PDFs - again, google can be your friend!

Happy hunting!

Cheers,

The sound of 'one penny dropping'...  :-bd

Of course like all Luddites i'm not actually anti-'technology', just anti-'technology that puts people out of work' (deprives honest workers of bread...).

I have no interest in e-books at all. Books as they are work fine by me.

fred.

Just (last hour) got an iPad2 so will be doing more on the eBook front.

Kindle is available as a PC app and iOS (and possible others) - and syncs between all devices.

eBooks certainly aren't the main reason for me getting an iPad - but handy access to stuff is good.  I do like proper books, especially nice big ones with colour pictures, and have many shelves of books. But paper books are hard to transport and can be hard to find stuff in - but are great for flicking through at random.

I'm with Luddite.

1. Don't need to charge up a book.
2. Books always work
3. Kindles look crap on bookshelves.

Can you read a kindle on the bog? One of life's pleasures is retiring to the smallest room with a paperback, so how does the kindle measure up for reading on the throne?

If I were creating Pendraken I wouldn't mess about with Romans and  Mongols  I would have started with Centurions , eight o'clock, Day One!
