Hegyes (1849)

This was the 11th battle in our Hungary 1848 campaign. AAR is here:

Fought with Dave's lovely Pendraken armies. First time they've been on the table in a while

This was a very unusual battle – basically a division-scale ambush in which 12,000 Austrians attempting a surprise dawn attack run into 10,000 Hungarians who are entirely ready for them. Furthermore, halfway through the battle, the Austrians learn that a Hungarian force has outflanked them and is threatening their line of retreat. The Austrian mission therefore changes mid-game from "seize a village and river crossing" to "run away!" This is tricky to capture in a wargame scenario but I reckon we managed it.

A great sounding game Chris.

The only improvement might have been to use loads of books or foam sheets under the cloth to actually make the river valley on the table top! But never the easiest thing to represent.

Thanks, guys. Yes, you're right, Fred - in fact, if I'd run this at home and been able to set up at leisure in my war room, I would have done something like that. As it was, since it was a club night, I went for the quick-and-dirty method to maximise playing time.
