Hi Dave,  I have just sent Leon a link to the wikipedia page on the German Confederatio. As well as a lot of extra info, it lists the 39 member states! If you are looking for something more specific regarding forces in the 1848-49 war, I can provide that quite easily.

Steve is right to quote  Ralph Weaver's excellent Partizan Press book The Armies of the First Schleswig-Holstein War 1848-51. IMHO it is indispensable for this war, in particular for uniforms.

The list is for those States that sent troops to the front as it were. In 1848 most of the troops were from Hanover (by a country mile) with Brunswick, Oldenburg and Mecklenburg-Schwerin making up the rest. This was due to them being the closest to Schleswig-Holstein. In 1849 the other units listed moved to the front.

The Ralph Weaver book is superb, but not cheap. Nick Svensden's book is worth getting as is the one by Johs Nielsen from the National Museum, the latter with great paintings from the period.
