My eventual basing solution.

Most infantry: Based in groups of three on 20mm x 30mm bases

Skirmishers and mounted troops: Based in groups of three on 30mm x 40mm bases.


It gives a good "loose order" look, through 12 figures seem a little thin on the tabletop.
If you have a larger table (6 by 4 feet or larger) you may get a better visual effect by doubling or trebling the figure count.
