Battle of not-the-Jaxartes

First encounter. The blue boys are the Thessalians, who opted to flank-charge and destroy the Dahae, accepting that they'd be skewered in turn shortly afterwards. Figures are mainly a mix of Pendraken and Newlines, with a few Stever Barber, MM, and IM.

The situation in the centre. Note the Sarmatian allies behind a screen of light foot. I'm not sure what I was trying to do; a line of archers holds up Argyraspids the way an aerosol spray deflects a neutrino.

Rout of the Dahae. On the far flank, the Hetairoi have just started to waver under the impact of a shower of poisoned arrows. Decisive.

And the rematch begins....

The prodromoi failed to deliver the goods; the Sakae absorbed the charge and shot them up heavily. Sadly for your barbarian reporter, the Thracian cavalry turned up before we could break them, and we were smashed in a moment.

Sadly, the Macedonians were good at supporting their heavy frontal attacks with pinning flank charges by their lighter troops. This cost me several units.

The one comfort was that the C-in-C's household cavalry shot the Hetairoi to bits, taking out Alexander as well, and rode them down while they were reeling. Both sides had to test army morale for losses at the same time. Alas, the good guys lost.
