Good morning.

My passion for the navel seems to be growing.

In other news, I'm getting quite fond of ships.

I've just taken a sample order of 1:2400 offerings from Tumbling Dice's Ancients ranges.

My problem is, they come with sails.

My reading of trireme warfare is that before combat the sails were lowered and the mast shipped. However ... the sails are a great opportunity for some artistic endeavour. Do I go aesthetic, and leave the masts on, or historical and snip 'em off?

Keep them on, they look better, even if they aren't quite right.

Orcs

Well I have to agree with Nick, while they serve no purpose they do look good.

Its a bit like your testes (or most of our testes) at our stage in life they are no longer needed for their primary purpose, but we look rather strange without them  :)

About the testes or the masts?!

I might keep the masts up to represent flagships - paint a groovy design on for each, maybe print out some tiny chits to slip onto the base of the other ships in the squadron?

I'd snip them off then refigure the models so they are detachable - sails up for approach, down for engagement.

(but than I like making work for myself  :))

I guess a lot of women would like to do that with our testes, only attaching them when children are wanted

We clearly bring out different reactions in females.

Only my merchantmen have masts and sails in that period.

I like my warships cleared for action!

Like others have said I would definitely say they look better on however if you do snip then they'll will be a lot quicker to paint, perhaps just keep them on the command ships

Take care

With 1:2,400 triremes only being about 15mm long I think it is worth leaving the sails on or the ships will look pretty insignificant :-\

At 1:1,200 I'd take them off

Don't know about ancient naval warfare though.
I have neither the time or the crayons to explain why you are wrong.
