Us native English speakers are indeed fortunate nowadays that English is spoken throughout the world. In the 18th Century (and late 17th Century?), French was the language used to communicate with other nations and, of course, long before that, Latin. It tends to make many of us lazy about learning other languages although, to be fair, it is a bewildering choice for us - which language to choose to get the best bang for our buck?

My skills in english most propably stem from the sheer need to understand the language. You can't play computer games if you don't get past the main menu :D
