Melvyn Bragg's Radio 4 programme on 28th will be discussing the Mexican-American War of 1846.  One you don't hear much about, so I'm lookimg forward to it.

Green grow the rushes oh. Apparently some folk believe that is where the term Gringo comes from. Also, apparently the USA is not an imperial power - Texas, we'll have that; New Mexico, we'll have that; Colorado, we'll have that; Arizona, we'll have that; California, we'll have that. Madre de dios, where will it stop? With Mexican kids in cages apparently (sorry, but my Spanish heritage is showing).

No emperor or empress, therefore not an imperial power. Simple enough.

So how do you deal with:
a) The British Empire  - constitutional monarch [king or queen] - although imperial title, but only for India.
b) The French Empire - a republic
c) The Soviet Empire - communist, I kid you not.

Not the least of that man's offences is the damage he's doing to the image of the world's greatest card game.

Typical. There's always one who rerails the thread.
I have neither the time or the crayons to explain why you are wrong.
