Ah! But this is Shetland. We don't play the bagpipes, we don't wear kilts (too windy) and we obviously wish to trade in the thistle for ... the monkeyflower.

Couldn't it be a peat-orchid or a moss-asphodel or a yellow-oxlip? Why monkeyflower?  It doesn't look anything like a monkey!




As a child my grandfather told me of the red rose of Shetland that bloomed along the roadside. This was in fact discarded McEwans Export cans in those days that held differed mores about drink-driving.
