Thanks for the replies Mollinary and D Guy - very helpful. I'll keep and eye out for further developments  :)

I have found room for a small 4x4 table to play on at home if I get the chance so we'll see where that goes.

That would give you a 10x10 grid if you used a 12cm grid, which would fit with Baroque basing...  :-\

I plan to combine use Baroque basing to give me a guide for the grid size. Nice when I can use the same bases across a variety of rulesets :).

Ideally there should be a little room to either side of your units but doesn't appear absolutely nesseccary. They just need to fit within the box.
But since you can have two units in one box, possibly with command as well, the base depths need to be taken into consideration. The playing cards used for activation and a few status markers also have to find some place to go. I use very small playing cards!

Incidently, Mollinary told me he uses 12.5cm for his base grid.

Well there is always the sabot approach (which I use) to get some flexibility in basing size.
