Yep, ordered my first 10mm figures from Pendraken.

Leon has my dosh in hand I am now committed ( or could that be, I should be committed?) to painting a French
Army of the LOA/ 9 years war.

I will be setting it up for Maurice on a modest sized table, and a hex variant of OHW on a small table that can be used as a portable Wargame.

I have painted two 15mm ADLG armies in the past 6 months so I am fairly sure I can do a reasonable job
On these, and keep the momentum up so that I will do an opposing force for them.

As I have struggled to find an Order if Battle for the 1690's battles I will do units to match the Pendraken flag sheets.
They will be assembled into a small unrecorded army operating on the fringes of the campaign.
I have had this bizarre idea to name the Generals after French painters and their titles after French plonk,
hence Marshal Claude Monet - Duc de Calvados and Prince Paul Cezanne- Vicomte Bollinger

Then I just need to figure out the opposition, British/ Dutch in the Low Countries with those Waterloo type buildings, is Austrian/ Germans with those lovely half timbered towns.

Wish me luck
Bryan

Bet someone here can point you in the right direction for OOBs.

"unrecorded" and "fringe", two of the more interesting words in wargaming.  :)

Now that you've jumped you may soon find you can't get enough of the little guys.

Good Luck.

Well done - I'm now looking forward to seeing the results.

I think you are doing the right thing in terms of creating your
OOB.   The information available is limited.   If you pick an
historical OOB and try to recreate it, you will quickly run into
problems with lack of info on both uniforms and flags.   I am
trying the same with a later battle (Ramillies) and am running
into this issue.

I would suggest looking at Osprey's 'Army of Louis XIV'which
summarises a lot of known uniform information.

I have found some OOB information on this excellent site which
you might find interesting :

http://vial.jean.free.fr/new_npi/archives/archiv.htm

If nothing else, this indicates the sheer scale of the battles
and how armies might be organised on the day.

You might also find it worthwhile looking at the League of
Augsburg forum as this already includes lots of articles talking
about the OOBs, uniforms, flags etc.

http://www.leagueofaugsburg.com/fightingtalk/index.php

You might want to look at this site :

http://rusmilhist.blogspot.co.uk/

Although many of the entries are in russian, it does include a huge
amount of useful information in english.

Finally, you might find this link useful - it lists all the
allied Regiments in the Camp at Gerpines in 1691
with the main coat colours and the 'linings' (ie.
folded back to show on the cuffs).

Best of luck with the project.

As has already been said good information on this war can be to find, but not impossible if you want to go down the road of recreating all or part of a real army. This will involve dealing with gaps in our knowledge as Glorfindel has mentioned.

More generally if you are going to pick units of the right general type then perhaps this will help.

There were 4 main European fronts - Flanders, the Rhinelands, Savoy in Italy and Catalonia in Spain.

The Confederate army in Flanders was Dutch, British, various German states, Spanish (mainly Walloon units), Danes and Swedes.
In the Rhinelands the army was usually various German states but others (Spanish/Dutch) were also there in some campaigns.
In Savoy were Savoyards, Austrians and Spanish (mainly Italian units) plus some Germans states. Note - the bulk of the Austrian army and many of their German allies were fighting the Turks & so not many in this war.
In Catalonia were the Spanish - actual Spanish units this time!
