I think I've missed a couple of updates in the last couple of weeks - I've painted the Semoventes for the Italians, which Generalissimo Leon graciously released to my forces just in time to get into battle. And I've pained some Zulus. Will try to find photos of both of these.

Rommel - Battle of Deir el Tarfa

Went back to the desert with Rommel, and had another really good game. I think the problems we had with the first game were probably just due to over analysis while getting to grips with new rules. But new we have played several games in different periods of the war, and they all produce good games.

This battle was a crushing victory for the DAK, pinning the British back on the first turn, and slugging away at them from the front foot. Full battle report over on the Honour forums - http://www.sammustafa.com/honour-forums/general-discussion-and-announcements-46/deir-el-tarfa-plus-sized/

Lots of beige tanks on the table, including a fair few Pendraken ones.

Miraculously, the freshly painted Italians survived pretty much unscathed.

Zulus

When I got The Men Who Would be Kings rules, they seemed a great little set of rules for Colonial gaming. In 10mm it would be quick and easy to build a force, as they comprise of 4 to 8 units, with units from 8 to 16 figures each. No force is more than about 100 figures strong, and most of the European ones are half that.

But someone was selling a pile of Zulus, they were cheap. My mate was willing to have half of them. So I now have a great big pile of Zulus. Last weekend I sprayed the first small batch of them, and got a couple of layers of dark brown on them. Then during the week I've done weapons, shields and loin cloths.

Then this evening I got the basing started.

I'm ultimately going for lush green bases - as this seems appropriate for the time of the campaigns (and its what the Osprey I have shows!!) Also green should set off the dark tones of the figures well.

Not certain of the manufacturer - I think they are Old Glory. There are a couple of Pendraken command figures in there as well.

Thanks chaps.

Got the basing finished today

Some verdant greenery added.

Not entirely sure about the tops of the heads, and head bands. Are these fine in dark brown, or should they be different colours?

ErHo

Looks great!

As far as the headbands, didnt they like wearing cheeta fur for headbands and such?     Im not sure about pulling that off at that scale!

Others will know the right colours for the head bands but I think they would look better if they added some more colour or even just contrast, a light tan perhaps  :-\

The green grass definitely sets the figures off :)

Thanks chaps.

A peruse of my Osprey book makes me agree, that a tan colour would probably be good for the head bands, in the drawings they are often shown as leopard or cheetah skin (not doing that in 10mm). Or in photos in a pale plain colour.

I also think I need to do hair in black - which is annoying as I went back and added brown to the tops of heads, as I thought they were sculpted bald!

Whoah there! Before splashing paint around, those look more like the head rings worn by married warriors. I seem to remember they were a darkish colour. I'm assuming this is for The Men Who Would Be Kings, in much the way I multi based 10mm figure for Dux Brittaniarum.
