I too will be sticking with the GW mat for temperate gaming.
Need a desert mat though so may well use some of these techniques. A beige sheet or blanket should be a good starting point and easy to get hold of.

I am going for the same idea..I will give some sand coloured fleece a go and maybe sponge the colours onto it....
Sometimes I wonder - why is that frisbee geting bigger - and then it hits me!

Encountered this today. Fascinating game mat (or is it more than one piece?). No idea of origin (e.g., homemade or what).

Looks like one piece to me that is then sprayed with different colours. Very effective if done well as this is.

North Star are starting to carry them from the 27th at £60 for one of the big ones, should ease the postage a bit.
