Looks awesome Lemmey!  I always love the diorama-style basing, but I'm way too lazy and lack enough talent for it.  Good stuff, I'll keep my eyes open for the next installment, though I really don't need you pushing me towards another genre  ;)

Jack

Nice work Will; you are a machine :o

How many figures do you paint in an average week?
Title: Re: Samurai Army
Post by: Duke Speedy of Leighton on 27 February 2014, 12:19:48 PM
Depends...
I tend to work in big batches of a platoon (c30-40) or a division (c140) at a time. It takes me about a fortnight to do that many, if I have nights with no distractions. It inevitably ends up as night 1 base coats and inks, night two flesh and inks, etc...
7 Samurai took three nights, most of which was waiting for bases and pva to dry and find details for flags.  :]]

One army uses them in one battle, someone films it (extremely inaccurately), and everyone buys them (including me). Meanwhile, call for some monkish cavalry, musketeers, or archers....

This is all great stuff. A friend and I have been talking about the Imjin war as a project for many years. I mentioned the idea of doing it in 10mm a while back and I think it will definitely be the way to go based on what I see here.

Ooohhh!!!  Shiny!

Nice work!

Gives me another thought toward adding these to my collection once my current dozen projects are done.  Saw something on the History Channel this weekend about '47 Ronin'.  That and the above work are inspiring!

These are 10mm deep rear bases, so that I can use the units I've already painted in FoGR. Makes them 40x40 stands. There is an AWFUL lot more Samurai to do before November now...
This is the start of an ashugaru spear unit.

Hi Lemmey,
I'm really looking forward to seeing the finished article... I've got a bit of a soft spot for Samurai.
I did a Samurai project a few years ago in 28mm using Dixon figures. Ended up buying far too many (a lot of them are still in a drawer somewhere - unpainted of course) :-)

I'm really admiring your perseverance with these Will ;)

Form the top of my head I have had the following Samurai Projects over the years none of which are still in my possession:

28mm Samurai - cant even remember the manufacturer but it may have been foundry. I even had the Samurai Walled Residence from an now defunct company called Village Green. This was the only collection I ever finished and all I can remember is that I sold the lot on and got far less than I paid for them.....

I had a 15mm Two Dragons Samurai army for WRG Renaissance which remained in its bags unloved for far too long before being sold off for far less than I paid for it.

I also had a 15mm Lancashire Games Samurai Army which I gave away as I was so appalled by the figures.

I then bought a Pendraken Samurai Army maybe three or four years ago which again I sold on for far less than I paid for them.

Anyone see a theme emerging here?? ;D

I'm kind of liking the idea of an oriental army in the next few years, if I sent you a list of figures, do you think you could buy them, keep them in a cupboard for a couple of years, then I'd be happy to take them off your hands for half price?   ;)

No?

Oh, well.

ML - thats a good looking start - and a general's enclosure would be very cool

Ran is a stone cold masterpiece, its the film that got me into Samurai warfare. Kagemusha is great, though it can at times feel like a long sit at times. However it does give an interesting perspective on the demise of the Takeda clan, which is a very familiar story to anyone who studies the period, and has plenty of arresting scenes.

Kagemusha is the story of a Takeda lord's double who is used to maintain the fiction that the lord is alive after his death to protect the Takeda clan's status and position. In this scene the double's aides are worried that others will find out he is an impostor

Masakage Yamagata: Little Takemaru was a problem, but the horse is worse. It can tell. Only the late lord could ride it.
Nobufusa Baba: If the double falls off, everyone will suspect.
Nobukado Takeda: Lord Shingen has been ill. He must refrain from riding.
Masakage Yamagata: Good idea.
Masatane Hara: There are many other problems. We must be careful to keep the late lord's intentions.
Katsusuke Atobe: Tonight he will have to meet the late lord's mistresses. How will he be with them?
Masakage Yamagata: Our master has been ill. He must refrain from riding.

Cavalry, extra figures to bring what I had to four bases per unit. front rank are lancers, back rank are mostly bows, allows me to mix up options depending on era.

Really Nice Will.  ;)

I love the Samurai period and have owned various armies in 28mm, 20mm, 15mm (Two Dragons - anyone remember them? Stunning miniatures!) and 10mm, but sadly I have never finished a single army nor have I found a rule set that really captures the period for me.

I do recall some big skirmish rules and even shelled out on a 28mm Samurai Residence from Village Green which was lovely. Fought a single game on a 18ft x 6ft table over a weekend and then boxed them up and sold them on.

The Pendraken miniatures are nice but the thought of attaching all those sashimono defeated me and I sold them on.

Two Samurai generals finally finished.

I wanted to do a Seven Samuari inspired general stand, but then I realised the film is in black and white!

The most bizarre phenomenon of the last two millennia was getting faith regarded as a virtue.

I read that as "plants". Think the exclamation mark confused me.

Thought it was some kind of marojouana raid.

You must be thinking of Oda Marijuana, one of the less successful Sengoku daimyos. Famed for his poem "If the nightingale will not sing.// It's all about how you look at it, man.// What were we talking about?"

Since the army is in action this weekend, thought I had better do some purpose painted casulty markers (hint, they'e seen a LOT of action as I lost both games (9-15 & 8-15) while only needing a hit on both my opponent's armies to win either game today)!
