Title: Who wants Mongols? - Pledging closed, Mongols on the way!
Post by: Leon on 24 June 2013, 12:10:18 AM
We've discussed Kickstarters on the Forum previously, and how we're not sure how viable they are in 10mm, so we've decided to try a bit of an experiment.  After an email chat with one of the members, and the position of these figures in the Top 10 Requests, we're going to use a Mongol range as the basis for this experiment.

So, how it works:

- Below is a list of the prospective range, listed by code, with a brief description of the contents, and the price per pack.

- If you would be seriously interested in a range of Mongols, please check through the list, and work out what you would potentially purchase.

- Make a post here, stating what you would buy, such as 2 x MON1, 2 x MON3, etc.

- If there is something missing from the prospective list, let us know and we can see about adding it to the range.

We are looking to get 'pledges' of purchases over £750 total before we start production on these.  There would be no money taken from anybody until the range was produced and up on the website.

The range would be sculpted by Phil (Techno), using new horse dollies for the smaller Mongol mounts.  We would estimate somewhere around a 3 month wait from the point we reached our target, to the figures going on general sale and people being able to order them.  Once they were on sale, everyone who has pledged would be able to go over to the website and make their orders as normal.

There is no obligation to purchase once the range is made, but please only state your interest if you are serious about buying into it.  We can't really offer much in the way of discounts for these 'pledges' but we'll see if we can come up with some extra bonus items for those who have pledged.  Maybe some extra General / Personality type figures which would be included as freebies.  All of the sculpts would be posted here on the Forum for feedback from everyone.

So, as mentioned above, this is a complete experiment, and we have no idea how it will turn out.  Hopefully loads of people will get involved, and a new 10mm Mongol range will become a reality!

The range:

MON1 - Light cavalry, with bow (3 poses)
MON2 - Light cavalry, with sword and bow (2 poses)
MON3 - Light cavalry, with lance and bow (2 poses)

MON4 - Medium cavalry, with bow (3 poses)
MON5 - Medium cavalry, with sword and bow (2 poses)
MON6 - Medium cavalry, with lance and bow (2 poses)

MON7 - Heavy cavalry, with bow (3 poses)
MON8 - Heavy cavalry, with sword and bow (2 poses)
MON9 - Heavy cavalry, with lance and bow (2 poses)

MON10 - Cavalry command (5-6 mixed poses, including camel drummer)

MON11 - Dismounted cavalry, with bow (3 poses)

MON12 - Camp followers + pack horses (4 poses + horse)

MON13 - Genghis Khan + generals (3 figures) - Free to everyone who pledges to this project

MON14 - Yurts (3) - A pack of 3 different Yurts!  We'll confirm the price on these once the masters have been made and we've got a good idea of the sizes.

MON15 - Keshik bodyguard (2 poses)
MON16 - Dismounted command (3 poses)
MON17 - Civilians (5 poses)  - Free to everyone who pledges to this project

All packs contain 15 cavalry or 30 foot, priced at £4 per pack, unless otherwise stated.

So, that's it I think!  Let me know if there are any questions on anything, and please spread the word among anyone you think would be interested in these.  The more interest we can stir up, the more likely we'll be seeing these before the end of 2013.

UPDATE - GOAL REACHED, TARGET HIT, COMMENCING MONGOLS!!! - Thanks to everyone who has pledged so far!

Keep the pledges coming though, as the more we can get pledged, the more we can offer to those who have backed this project.  Everyone who is on the list so far will be getting Genghis and a couple of generals as a freebie, and if we can hit £1000, we'll do a blanket 10% discount for all the backer orders as well.

UPDATE 2 - £1000 TARGET HIT!!! - Everyone who pledges will now receive 10% discount on their order.  If we can now hit £1250, we will add a pack of Yurts to the range as well.

UPDATE 3 - £1250 TARGET HIT!!! - Everyone who has pledged so far will be receiving a free pack of Genghis Khan and his Generals, along with a 10% discount on their overall order.  In addition, we've added the Yurts to the range as well.

UPDATE 4 - £1500 TARGET HIT!!! - Thanks to everyone who has pledged so far!  As well as the freebies and discount, we'll also add the keshik guards and the camel drummer to the range now.  Only 9 days left for pledges, so make sure you've got yours in!  The next target is £1750, where we will add a dismounted command option as well.

UPDATE 4 - £2000 TARGET HIT!!! - We've done it!  We have hit the £2000 mark, thanks to everyone who has pledged so far!  We've added both the dismounted command and the civilians to the range now.  Everyone who has pledged will receive:

- 10% discount on your order.
- FREE Genghis Khan and his generals.
- FREE pack of civilians.

We'd best get some sculpting and moulding done now then!   :D

This  is  really interesting and I think a good way to go.

Not wishing to add huge amounts to range but can see a couple of useful additions

Command with Camel Drummer
Dismounted Cavalry with Lance
Dismounted Cavalry with lance and Pavisse

Artillery - mainly with chinese crew

Good luck!

Not sure on what combination of packs (until the sculpts are done). But approx. £40 purchase.

Sadly, not my area of interest - but a useful piece of customer research which might well be applied to other periods.

How much roughly as a total?  2 packs of everything would run to £88?

£36 of goodies that'd give me a 1000pt Warmaster Hun army to fight my crusaders. Depending on poses they'd probably slot in okay with my Arabians as well.

1   MON1 - Light cavalry, with bow (3 poses)
1   MON2 - Light cavalry, with sword and bow (2 poses)
1   MON4 - Light armoured cavalry, with bow (3 poses)
1   MON5 - Light armoured cavalry, with sword and bow (2 poses)
1   MON8 - Heavy cavalry, with sword and bow (2 poses)
2   MON10 - Cavalry command (3-5 mixed poses)
2   MON11 - Dismounted cavalry, with bow (3 poses)

I'd certainly be willing to pay that if it came down to it.

These could be very tempting - especially at the back end of the year, in time for Christmas.

What is the planned difference between the light cavalry and the light armoured cavalry? Most army lists (which I know are just army lists) don't put in this extra distinction?

Would an allied/subject light cavalry figure be more useful than 5 light variations (not that more figure variations aren't good).

I'm sure I will be up for £40-50 worth - probably get me back to playing Hail Caesar to get nice Horse Archer rules too!

The lights would be in hats, no armour at all, and then the lightly armoured would have helmets and mail.  I suppose 'Medium cavalry' would be a better term!

We can add some camp followers to the lists I think, and Genghis would be done as a special bonus figure for everyone who has pledged to the project.

I've added MON12 - Camp followers + pack horses to the lists now.  This would be 4 poses of civilian, plus a pack horse and would come in packs of 16 foot / 7 horses, unless people would prefer a different ratio.

Let me know if you'd like to update your order to add this pack in.

A pack of Camp followers is an excellent idea - put me down for a couple

However it would be quite nice to have a separate non-period specific animal range - eg pack horses, horses without any harness (ideal for both Mongols and Plains War Indians), pack camels, sheep ,goats and cows

There would definitely be an army pack option, although I don't have a list for the contents at this stage.  It would probably appear a little after the main release.

If we can get the pledges high enough, say around £1000, we'll look at offering a discount on every pledge as well as the bonus figures.

Greetings

Interested - though I'd need to fit them in a single smallish box.

Who would their (Pendraken produced) opponents be?

e.g. can the existing ranges do any of Mamluk Egyptian, Georgian, Alan, Polish/Teutonic knight, Lithuanian, Hungarian, Seljuq, Russian etc?  I'd prefer to avoid fighting an all cavalry army.

Regards

Edward

I'd gladly sign up for any figs I could use as Huns - doubly so if sculpted by Clibabnarium :-) in those instances, you could count on me for 2 packages of each, minimum.

It's all about timing!

I'm building a Mongol Army at the moment using other manufacturers, only because Pendraken hadn't done these before.  :(

However I'd like some dismounted bows, camp followers and Genghis .... Three packs for me please.

Say 7 packs for now (£28) until I do some army list research.

A great idea. This might just push me to start getting some DBA armies for the period.
I'd be looking to get 2 of the following. MON1, MON4, MON9,MON10, MON11, MON12 and one MON13.
Looking forward to seeing this range.

This is such a nice idea I'm going to support it. Even if I don't desperately 'need' a host of Mongols. (So many mini's to be painted still.) I'm sure the mini's will be wonderful. And I could always attach them to my Ottoman Empire as early migrating Turks.

You can write me down for the following:
1x MON1 - Light cavalry, with bow (3 poses)
1x MON2 - Light cavalry, with sword and bow (2 poses)

2x MON4 - Medium cavalry, with bow (3 poses)
1x MON5 - Medium cavalry, with sword and bow (2 poses)

1x MON6 - Medium cavalry, with lance and bow (2 poses)
1x MON9 - Heavy cavalry, with lance and bow (2 poses)

1x MON12 - Camp followers + pack horses (4 poses + horse)
1x MON13 - Genghis Khan - Free to everyone who pledges to this project.

optional addition:
2x MON11 - Dismounted cavalry, with bow (3 poses)
And the Warmaster Medieval armylist mentions the use of a Catapult. This might be a nice addition for siege games.

1x MON12 - Camp followers + pack horses (4 poses + horse)
1x MON13 - Genghis Khan - Free to everyone who pledges to this project.

Great Idea this "non-Kickstarter" can't wait for these guys. Hopefully I discover a good way of painting 10mm horses soon, if I do I will add some on the final order.

I would seriously love some Mongels, already have a larger scale army of them but in 10mm!!! YES PLEASE!!!

Missing from the range are all the dismounted and infantry types, the Mongel army used conquered nations soldiers in its forces, so Chinese and Persian infantry would be a good addition.

As for a pledge...  :-\ put me down for 10 packs as a starter  8)

Absolutely KIMC3 - it is one of the basic wargamers' rights that you can have the same army in more than one scale

I've already got a Mongol army in 15mm

Hopefully the range will expand in all directions - east, south, west & north

A very interesting idea and glad ro see it's doing so well, but I would be rather more interested in another 10mm range of Mongols if codes were included armed with rifles rather than bows. There would need to be a light cavalry "firing from horseback" code and lancers etc. others with rifles slung on back in place of the bow and quiver.

OK, admittedly of limited use to those hankering to be Genghis Khan but a godsend for us Back of Beyond types and (if you pretendi thery're Crimean Tartars or Kalmucks and do a few mods) those seeking different irregular allies/opponents for C17-C19th  Poles, Cossacks or Russians.

I just found an email in my inbox from Pendraken about this project  :)

I would have preferred the project to be for Huns rather than Mongols, as I'm looking for a historical opponent for my Pendraken Late Roman army. So far they only get to fight Celts/Gauls, Elves, Orcs and Dwarves. That said, these will do as Huns for now.

So put me down for 23 packs to start with. I'll need another 23 packs about 3 - 4 months later to finish the army. I don't mind if you put that down as 23 or 46 packs. So long as we're clear that they will be ordered in two separate batches.

Mongols were like medieval nazis who massacred peasant farmers as they saw no use for them and rendered down dead civilians' bodies to make fat to grease the wheels of their wagons and siege towers. Shame on you, Kallistra, Old Glory and Magister Militum for making ranges glorifying them. You are each worse than Hitler  ;)

Only thing i'd use mongols for would maybe be Easterling or Variag cavalry for a LOTR campaign.

Welcome to the forum.

The Roman armies that fought the Huns were what WRG and DBM army lists call Patrician Roman, which is kind of a cross between Hunnic/Byzantine style armoured cavalry with bows on unarmoured horses and relatively low morale infantry - and with a high proportion of barbarian allies. For some of the cavalry for Patrician Roman the closest figures in 10mm are probably early Byzantines, though Late Roman figures would probably be fine for many of the other units

I did play a battle which i wrongly thought was historically accurate long ago against my brother with me as Huns and him as Late Romans. It was very one sided in the Romans' favour, partly because Late Romans have so many high morale good foot archers and javelinmen that they take horse archers to pieces easily; and partly i think because the WRG 7th edition rules don't represent the unique bows the huns used, which seem to have been much more powerful than most nomad bows, and from archaeological excavations of Hunnic graves were a composite bow with a top half much longer than the lower half (found out about that from Terry Jones' Barbarians series - it'll likely be in the book too)

Huns Vs Patrician Romans would probably be a much more balanced fight than Huns vs Late Romans too.

Here's a link to the DBA army list with background historical info on the fanaticus website (http://www.fanaticus.org/DBA/armies/II83ab.html)

Hello all,

FYI there's currently a 2-for-£10 BluRay deal on Amazon and "Mongol" by Sergei Bodrov is in there, which I recommend. I usually struggle with sub-titled movies (painting/sculpting at the same time) but this was very engaging, spectacular and stirring, so I sat through it and enjoyed it immensely.

This is the link to the deal:

This is the previous release of the DVD with reviews:

Hi, just found this thread. You ask for possible additions to the range. My ideas would be:

1)  A pack of remount horses already saddled, possibly with one or two warriors on herd duties.

2) I know you are making a Chinggis Khan figure as a freebie to pledgers so how about a commander pack for others, models of Jebe the Arrow, Bo'orchu, Muqali possibly in Chinese armour to represent the fact he spent most of his latter career against the Jin of Northern China and the greatest of them all, Subedai Bahadur, who, legend has it, he had to be carried around on a cart because he was so big.

3) A pack of EHC, all in the same position to represent the keshik or the khan's guards.

4) Siege machines and crews including officers -who could double up as commanders for the dismounted warriors.

5) To go with the Chinggis Khan model, a model of the Great Naccara or camel-mounted kettle drummer that signaled the attack.

6) Unarmed peasants that the Mongols used as arrow-fodder.

In case you couldn't tell, I have a mahoosive interest in the Mongols, possessing four armies already in 6mm, 10mm, 15mm and 25/28mm.

Put me down for a pack of the dismounted archers (MON11) and one of the camp followers (MON12).

Not wishing to add huge amounts to range but can see a couple of useful additions

Command with Camel Drummer
Dismounted Cavalry with Lance
Dismounted Cavalry with lance and Pavisse

Artillery - mainly with chinese crew

Agree with this

Thanks for the welcome and information Dunnadd. Looks like the Huns are not as historically accurate for my Late Romans as I first thought. I still want some though  :D

Well, that's the £1500 target hit!  We will now add the keshik (Khan's guards), and I'll also chat with Techno about adding the camel drummer to the command pack.  This experiment will officially close on the 31st July, so make sure you've got your pledge in by then!  For anyone who has already pledged, if you can double check that we've got you down for the correct amount, that'd be great as well.

As Asda say (or is it Tesco?) , every little helps.

But they wont stop me buying new figures for long, and i can at least give my surport,if not a pledge.

Individuals, or groups of 3/5?  As a random suggestion, hex's would work nicely, slotted into each other to create a random mix of troops.  They can then roll across the table easily...!  And so many rules make use of hex bases...  ;) :D

Okay Leon, Dave.  How about an army pack...awe come on...I'll up my pledge...

The regular army packs contain 7 packs, which are discounted to £25, but with the discounts on all the project pledges already, you're getting a slightly better deal as you are:

Normal price for 8 packs = 1 army pack @ £25 + 1 regular pack @ £4 = £29 overall.

Not-KS price for 8 packs = 8 regular packs @ £4, discounted by 10% = £28.80 overall.

We wouldn't be able to do an extra 10% discount  as well on a pledged army pack unfortunately.

I'm using these for WM so the vast majority (given they'll mainly be cavalry) will be on 20x40mm.  However, I will be basing them in 2s, 3s and 4s to represent the "horde" element.   :-\

This is my first posting so bear with me if I make a mess of it.

I was delighted to hear that Pendraken are looking to bring out a new range - Mongols.
They have long been one of my favourite armies - from a long time ago in 15mm.   Now I am a convert to 10mm (English Civil War and Ancients) I must have them.

If I am not too late I would like to pledge to buy the following packs :-
          packs
MON1    5
MON2    1
MON3    1
MON4    2
MON5    1
MON6    1
MON7    1
MON8    1
MON9    1
MON10  2
MON14  2

Every success with your planned new range.

Thanks for all the welcomes to a new member of the forum.

I've already found a lot of interesting stuff in old posts, particularly on one of my interests - best, quick, satisfactory painting techniques for 10mm castings.
My favoured technique for small castings is a white undercoat, followed by a dark brown wash over the whole casting.   This wash does a satisfactory, quick, final job of the face, of any other flesh and lines all other recesses.
I then paint all the colours using an almost dry brushing, leaving dark brown edging between different colours.   The colours are just dabbed in quick, small quantities and then highlighted (including nose and forehead).
I do not try to be very precise going right into the edges where two colours will meet as the brown lining just appears like a dark, shadded recess.   It is particularly good with red coated ECW figures.
Of course I finish with a matt varnish.  It is a very quick way of achieving a reasonable paint job.

I now realise my maiden speech should not have been under the heading of "Who wants Mongols" but rather under a painting heading.
Just got carried away !

Please add the following to my order

3 x MON12 - Camp followers + pack horses (4 poses + horse)

3 x MON14 - Yurts (3) - A pack of 3 different Yurts!

Hopefully that will take it over the £1750 mark

Thanks for the post, I'll go and update the total now!  That means we've past the £1750 and we'll now have some dismounted command as well!  I've added MON16 to the lists now, so if anyone would like to add that pack to their pledge, let me know.

If we can manage to hit the £2000 mark, which would be fantastic, we'll do a pack of generic peasants, which will be another freebie for everyone who pledges.

Best add a couple of packs of MON 11, dismounted archers Leon.
Can we have siege engines at somepoint in the future too? Having read the Conn Iggulden Genghis Khan series, they are important.

I would like to pledge £30 for the new Mongols range, I'll work out the packs later.

I think one of the biggest wins for this pledgexperiment is the number of new recruits to the forum: myself included. Kudos to all at Pendraken, keep up the good work guys  =D>

We'll definitely look at getting those done as well.  The only reason that they've not made it into this non-KS, is because they'd need to fit into a different designers schedule, plus possible low-temp moulding, so I don't want to promise something which would quite likely take longer to reach production.  We'll get the bulk of the figures done and dusted for everyone, and then we can add more stuff a short while later.

It's a good job I'm not running Pendraken. I'd wait for two months then put up pictures of the worst Mongols you have ever seen. Include the odd missile launcher or horses with six legs, slender ankles that will break at a lark's whisper, outrageous headgear that would shame a Spanish grenadier and something that obviously started life as a Zulu, and hasn't progressed much.

Fortunately, the Dark Lord and his cohorts are not prone to such practical japery. Although I have no interest in Mongols (my tastes currently being of a more mechanised bent) I am 100% certain that the sculpting dwarves will do their usual excellent job and the figures will be little bundles of delight in 10mm capsules.

I wish the venture well.

I'll be definitely getting more but for the beginning I need to start small so I can also paint Ogadais Hungarian foes.
btw any chance of Jin or Song Chinese ;) ?

I need to do a bit more digging on the Yurts to finalise the designs.  From memory, they came in varying sizes, with the biggest being around 30ft across, and the average being 15-18ft.  So, we'd be looking at doing a few varieties, so maybe a 20mm / 30mm / 40mm diameter options?  That should give enough variety while not taking up too much space on the table.  Price-wise, we'll have to wait and see how much resin they take up, but I'd expect them to be somewhere around £5-6 once they reach retail.

Hi Leon,
Well i supose someone has to ask, now we have the mongols, who are they going to fight????? I think we need some new ranges so we can "Crush our enemis, see them driven before us ect, ect. Teutonic knights, russians , chinese or arabs.
What do we all think?

Steve.

We'll have to have a think on that one, and decide where to go once the range is up and running.  We'll need to send Phil back to Rome after the Mongols though, to get some resculpted opposition for our newly resculpted Gauls!

Quick question for everyone regarding the Yurts:

From what I understand, the larger yurt would be placed at the centre of the camp, with rings of progressively smaller yurts forming around it.  As such, folk will require more smaller ones than large ones?  So, how will people be arranging their yurts, and what kind of pack composition would be best?

We can do 1 of each per pack, or 1 large/2 med/3 small, or even code each size separately?  What would folk prefer?

We're still casting off the master moulds at the moment, all the prep for Smoggycon has delayed everything else, plus we've got a contract casting job in for 16 production moulds, which will need fitting in as well.  I'll get the surveys sent out either tonight or tomorrow, and then we can see where we are and which moulds to do first.

After we've sent out the first batch to everyone who's pledged, that shouldn't be a problem, but it wouldn't be viable while we're getting through this first run.

I've had to switch the spreadsheet over to a Word doc, so it won't automatically calculate your total, but I can sort that out at this end easily enough.  So, you can now download the file here: http://www.pendraken.co.uk/FileBin/MongolOrderForm.docx (http://www.pendraken.co.uk/FileBin/MongolOrderForm.docx)

Simply add in your quantities and send it over to us at d.pengilley@btinternet.com and we'll get them cast up!

I'll send the file link through to everyone by PM as well.

We're still working through the production moulds, at the same time as some contract work, so it's taking a little longer.  I am still hoping to have some of the orders sent out before Xmas, but it may only be some of the smaller ones, which don't require as many moulds to have been done.

Just to update, Dave will be finishing off the last few production moulds over Christmas, and then I can get started on all the orders as soon as we return.  I may pop in for an extra day over our break just to get some packs cast up.

Also, the initial stock of the Yurts arrived today as well, so they're ready to go out with the figures.

The casting of all the packs is coming along nicely, not many more to do now!  So, it's time for the pennies!  I've just sent out all of the PayPal invoices to everyone who has placed their order, so hopefully they've all come through OK to everyone.  If there's any queries, give me a shout.

Should be, yes.  I've got around 75% of all the packs cast, so if I can get a good casting session in on Monday, that'll be them all done I'd think.  There's more stock of the Yurt's coming soon as well, as we were a bit short on the Medium size, so everything's coming together now.

I'll also be contacting the people who haven't put their orders in yet, which is around half of the original pledgers.  We can only offer the 10% discount and free pack on their order if they get it to us before the end of this month, otherwise they'll have to order as normal when the packs go on general release.

Payment sent - if you can get the WWI guns cast up as well, that would be great.

I'll also be contacting the people who haven't put their orders in yet, which is around half of the original pledgers.

I'm quite surprised that so many people haven't turned their pledge into an actual order.

And they've gone!  The first batch of the Mongols has been posted, and they are currently en route to their various locations.  If you've paid for your order already, it would have been posted today (except for one, which needed some bases adding to it), and I'll send everyone an email to confirm.

Hopefully we'll have some happy chappies in the morning when the packages start landing.

Techno...its true it does steam (ground) after the rain...
the rocks and stones give off this vapour (odourless to humans)
However my staffy starts going round after rain, just licking stones, like he is on some sort of high..
I think the iron mineral reacts with rain....Its quite fascinating to watch as he drags big stone and rubs them on his body... :)

Surprised you can smell anything anyway.  Smell is made of tiny particles of the thing you're smelling; by that rationale, I reckon you must have inhaled AT LEAST 30 kilos of green stuff by now; your conk would probably survive a nuclear strike! :)
Title: Re: Who wants Mongols? - Pledging closed, Mongols on the way!
Post by: Techno on 09 March 2014, 07:38:38 PM
What I find 'strange' about the sense of smell, is how different 'pongs' appear to affect different folk.
Mrs T can smell certain things.....That I barely notice.....Like someone having a bonfire MILES away.
Then there are the complete opposites.....
30 kilo's of green stuff ?.....Nah.....Not through my nasal passages....Probably through the skin on my fingers though !! ;D ;D
Cheers - Phil
