Title: You want what making ?
Post by: Techno on 21 March 2012, 06:36:43 PM
Guys !

You do realize, that if you seriously want something that might not be on the immediate list of Leon's "Things to release or make ".....
I'll make them for you with pleasure....At the going rate.... ;)
Some of you will go "HOW MUCH !"...Others will go "That's a damn good price"
As long as it doesn't become 'too silly' in the number of 'extras' to be made....And doesn't mean I'm pestering Leon with requests of "Can you send me a master of this..or a master of that".....(I don't intend to make Leon's life even busier than it is already !!...That's not on.)

The only things I would steer clear of, are anything from ranges that the other designers are working on...or I regard as 'theirs'....I won't cut across them at all.
Basically....anything that PD are prepared to cast up....I'll make for you.

I've almost finished the first 'experiment' in doing this....(You know who you are Mr X) and it's gone well....So...If you're interested...PM me.

Cheers - Phil.

(April 8 2015)
PLEASE NOTE, CHUMS ;)...... For the moment, and for a minimum of a good few months I won't be able to do any 'extras' in the ways of new sculpts or conversions for anyone.

I may be able to resurrect this at some later stage, but it all depends on how busy I am......Also how busy poor Leon & Dave are in respect of moulding and casting.
Too much to do, and not enough time to do it...For all of us.  ;)

Cheers - Phil

If it was for you at your proper addy Lemmy....
Ooooh..about 2p.....+ £6.00 p&p.....I'd have to send it 'Special delivery' as it's a work of art of such incredible wonderfulness. (sic)
If we're talking anything to whichever Chancellor is in power.
I dunno......£50,000....Seems like a reasonable figure, don't you reckon ?

If it's for the EE....Nah...Forget it !

Horse poo is FAR too soft ...(Tho' the 'labs' seem to treat that as a gourmet meal) the Sheep poo works pretty well...But Leon moans like you know what, when I send masters made of that...So I do tend to use green stuff more than anything else.
No pleasing some people ! ;) ;D ;D ;D

The sculpting offer is serious, if you've not seen them, have a look through this board for the WIP threads for the Republican Romans, or Carthaginians, which Techno has done for us.

The figures would be cast by us once they were made.  If anyone's seriously interested, pop Techno a message through, and he can run through the details with you.

Truly...totally serious, if anyone's really interested....
I'd (I'd ??) be looking to Leon/Pendraken for the casting/mould making (I've chatted with Leon about this...and we think we've come up with a good 'idea' for the way to do this for figures that are 'way down the line'...or 'Only one person will really want this ".
No joke/Early April Fool.
Really.... If anyone's interested...I'm more than happy to do 'specials'.....Done it in the past....Like I say...PM me.

Thanks Nik, I just thought it was an obvious hole in a range that I was playing with, it wasn't going to upset any other sculpter and could be a longer term seller for the firm!
Phil is doing a superb job, and I thought if he was going to offer his time and efforts for this service I'd better put my money where my over large mouth is too!
Hopefully it will give my Goblins a bit of an extra edge in my larger Hail Caesar battles, and will also make a suitable higher level nasty for all you dungeoneers out there as he summons some of the new monsters that are around!
Have fun!

I'm sure Phil can sculpt them, the moulding and casting side of it would have to be approached differently to the way we do it with the 10's though.  Pop me an email if you'd like more info.

Why don't all you people who want Aztecs, Tarletons etc. form a collective and commission Phil jointly. Splitting the fee between you should make it reasonably cheap.  :)

Who's going to help ?
Leon's had a request from one of you chaps regarding a shako conversion for a Napoleonic Austrian type standard bearer.
Ive' got the master metal figure, with a 'flat top' shako......So what's the 'shape' I'm going to change it to ?

Can anyone post me a piccy up ?

Title: Re: You want what making ?

It's only a very slight conversion on that chap.  The figure you've got is the current Hungarian standard bearer, in the bell shako (gets wider towards the top).  I've got a chap after a generic shako'd standard to put with his Jagers and Grenzers, so the headgear needs changing to a straight shako instead (same width all the way up).

I'll double check with the customer for some pics.

Not only that, but from 1808 they wore the Corsehut, the wide-brimmed felt hat with the brim turned up at the side. Previous to that they wore the standard Kasket crested helmet like the line.

As far as I'm aware the Grenzers didn't carry standards either, although the volunteer freikorps often carried a Leibfahne.

Yep, that all matches what we've got.  I think the chap in question just wants to put standards with his units, so we'll get this generic type done, and then it can be used for other things if necessary I suppose.

Yep, looks about right to me, it's a copy of the NPA17 Grenzer shako, so the top should be the same circumference as the base?  I've tried to increase the size of the pic, but it's becoming pixellated when I make it bigger.  If you've still got the bigger pic Phil, I can edit that down once it's on the Forum?

Phil has produced just what I was after.  My take was, the one on the left would do, at a pinch, for:

Hanover, Wurttemberg, Hesse, Bavaria, Saxony for 1866 and 1870, and Austria for 1859;

And the one on the right, for Austria 1866, and Italy 1859 and 1866.

Anyone any other thoughts?

Go on - you know you want to... 8)

And how about generic militia, and armed civilians for modern insurgency in the West(not just ragheads) with the above mentioned weapon variants and some generic vehicles?

Herts Blue,

The first one is bare headed, which is why it covers so many nations. The second one in greatcoat, is a bit restricted by the coat and, anyway, I wanted an Austrian that was clearly an Austrian for my 1866 forces.  Paying the piper and all that!!!

Cheers,

I think it's an expression of amazement or disbelief, FK. "What do you want made?" would have changed the sense completely. Besides, it's subject to the unwritten law: I speak English; you have an accent; he's a bloody foreigner.  :D

An variation on new RR Hastati and princeps, with sword instead of pila could be great. Also, different helmet decoration, like plumes for hastati, horse mane for princeps and crest for triarii reflecting their hoplitic past.

OK...firstly...   :D ;)

[Daily Mail mode]

There's no such thing as 'British English'.  It's just English.
All other forms of English are wrong, but at least they're trying so we can forgive them.

Secondly...

It isn't a dialect.
Its the natural language of the human brain.
People of other nations may choose to make their lives more complicated by translating their natural English language thoughts into another language, but rest assured English is in there somewhere.

This is why, when we English go abroad we don't need to learn other languages...we simply speak loudly and slowly, and it sets up the vibrations in said foreign waiter's head so that he understands exactly what we want.

These vibrations are also triggered by the foreign type looking at our bright red burned skin, flabby flesh, and Union flag shorts.

Hand gestures and pointing at the menu help too.  We do like to try and make it easy for you. You're welcome.

Seriously though, i see your comment actually as a positive.  You're right, there is something about, particularly 'British' English that can put such finely graded nuance into its language.

As Hertsblue amply demonstrates with:

'You want what making?'   [This expresses surpise, scorn, and incredulity]

'What do you want making?' [A simple request]

Interestingly, there's a bit of a thing going on in America at the moment where 'Britishisms' are begginning to creep in, often because 'American English' lacks the capacity to express suitable nuance.

For example, during the case of the intern Chandra Levy, American News reporters began to use the British phrase 'to go missing', rather than the American 'to disappear', as it was more nuanced in expressing the uncertainties around that situation.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-19670686 (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-19670686)

And when you add in intonation, English becomes even more flexible.

'Don't do that'  [a barked order]

'Don't do that'  [a plea for someone to stop]

'Don't to that'  [a suggestion to do something else]

:D

I've presume that other languages have equal flexibility?   :-\

I guess english is an easy language to learn at a basic level but really hard to master.

Grammar and conjugation are easy...but the sounds are strange and the shades are infinite.

What I hear when I hear english: "Chewing hug from bistoufly..."

Strangely enough I understand english from London better than American, altough I watch more American serials.

'Flat' Southern accents are probably a lot easier to understand if English isn't your native tongue, so I'm not surprised at your comment above !

Having not had to jump back into this thread for a while....'Cos I've been able to find the info I need....Or I've been sent links...

I'm a bit stuck.
'Hat swap' to do to a 'fur colpack'.
Anyone help me with a link to what a fur colpack looks like. (I get no joy 'googling')
Apparently something like the figure(s) in NPF 26.
Anyone got a nice pic of those by any chance. (I should have asked Leon to send me a sample...But I'm stupid !) #-o
Doesn't seem to be a pic in the catalogue section. Pants !!

Just checked it, it seems that right clicking the image and selecting 'copy' as you would with a website link will automatically save the direct link of the image, from there just right click between the img/img thingy on this site and select 'paste'.
If I read it right that should work.

They look great Phil. Am I right in thinking these will be available to everyone eventually? If so a big thankyou to Quazar42 for commisioning them.

The elite company in greatcoat figure can be used for lots of things other than grenadier or voltiguer. If you file the tuft off of his pom-pom he can be a young or middle guard in greatcoat. And importantly for me, he is perfect for an 1813 'marine artillery' infantry figure. (These were the best infantry, besides the guard, available in 1813).

Cheers, Rob  :)

Post by: Techno on 24 April 2013, 02:02:28 PM
Hi Rob.

Yep.....
They'll go in to PD's range at some stage in the future.
The basic deal is......

Mr 'X,Y,Z' pays yours truly for making something that might not be really commercially viable for Leon to produce at this particular moment in time.
But then the figures become Pendraken's...SOLELY...Not mine..not the commissioner's ....This is to save any dispute as to who the figures 'belong to'.
Leon casts up a number of 'freebies' for Mr X (That takes Leon and Dave's time and money)....But if 'Mr X' wants lots more, they're there to be produced at the 'going rate' and will become part of PD's catalogue from that point on.

Hope that makes sense ! :)
Cheers - Phil

Title: Re: You want what making ?
Post by: Rob on 24 April 2013, 02:56:34 PM
Thanks Phil, yes that is clear.

If it is of any influence to Dave and Leon, I would commit to at least 12 of the elite hussars + 12 ordinary hussars.
( I have at present 2 regiments of 24 each, I'd have to have a 3rd to not waste 8 existing figures that would be replaced by 8 elites. So 4 extra elites + 8 replaced and 12 extra to make up the 3rd regiment.)

I would also commit to at least 96 of the greatcoat elites to make up the marine infantry. Additionally as I already mix greatcoat figures into my infantry battalions for that ragged look, I would need elites for these also.

All that needs to be sorted now is some elite chasseurs a cheval.  :)

Would it be rude to ask here how much you charge for these commisions Phil?  :-\

Phil, Just bumped into this. Looks like you have been following a British hussar reference with the narrower busby design than the French colpack. The French Hussar colpack was generously wide and the plume would have had a pom-pom.

- as I have attempted in my own line chasseurs à cheval conversions:

www.michaelscott.name/1809/1809blogpost65.htm (http://www.michaelscott.name/1809/1809blogpost65.htm)

The bell-shape is a characteristic of the French design -- as it is for the shako of the 1809 French line infantryman.

I was a bit flippant yesterday. On the plume I actually pondered the question a bit. I worried that too much detail would make the plume too fragile, and preferred the impressionistic, but more solid style. On the dimensions of the collpack. Its not that easy to be certain from a photo, and is probably a judgment call, but to me it looked right. For future projects I will propose to Techno to publish photos before they go off to Pendraken HQ so that others can comment.

At the moment I have two projects in the pipeline with Techno: Elite chasseurs a cheval and creating a set of line horse artillery with shakos (the current figures have all collpacks, which according to my sources is correct for guard horse artillery but not line).

I have seen the http://www.retronaut.com/2011/05/photographs-of-napoleons-veterans/ (http://www.retronaut.com/2011/05/photographs-of-napoleons-veterans/) in the past but have never paid too much attention to the old gentlemen in their napoleonic uniforms, until this discussion. What stands out to me is that the coplpaks, bearskins, plumes and especially the epaulets all look bigger than any wargame company models in their figures.

The only thing I can put this down to is that subconciously we interprate drawings and paintings but a photograph shows them as they really are.

By the way I am really pleased you are also getting the horse artillery done. I think you are right in theory about the uniform, but it was the same situation with grenadier bearskins, and there was still plenty of those around in 1809. Basically trying to get the French to follow uniform regulations to the letter was like trying to herd cats, so probably there was still plenty of horse artillery companies still wearing the hussar style in 1809. Thinking about it the Austrian infantry adopted the shako in 1805 but there were still plenty of German regiments still in the helmet in 1809. (/ramble  :))

Something new.

Some conversions of some SYW heavy cavalry for Kustenjaeger..... to bearskins.

(http://i1118.photobucket.com/albums/k611/technodestructorman/IMGP4904_zps46099ced.jpg) (http://s1118.photobucket.com/user/technodestructorman/media/IMGP4904_zps46099ced.jpg.html)

Comments welcome.....They were 'worked' from an image from a reference pic from K, which I believe was from an Osprey book.
Extra green stuff on the legs is due to these particular metals being a little thin on those areas.
I have been playing around with the height of the front of the bearskins.....Now I'm not sure if they're a little too tall.

Cheers - Phil.

Title: Re: You want what making ?

Just for clarification these are French cavalerie legere converted by Phil to wearing bearskins and designed to represent German regiments and those French regiments that adopted the bearskin prior to the end of the SYW.

If anyone has any views they would be welcome as I'd like the figures to be reasonably right!  I am sure that patterns were likely to vary (it sounds as if the Cuirassiers du Roi may have had a front plate) but if I can get to 'oh yes that's a French cavalryman in bearskin' that will be good.

Regards

Edward

That was impossible!  :'(
Title: Re: You want what making ?
Post by: Techno on 01 June 2013, 08:06:25 AM
Anyway you can pin it back on Will ?
In truth, if I had to replace a hand on a figure, I'd almost certainly find it far less hassle to remodel the hand, rather than sticking something as small as that back on.
I can just about drill into the leg of a 10mm figure if I have to repair a master metal by pinning it with 'fuse' wire.
I'm guessing that an arm of a 15mm figure would be roughly the same thickness.....But the hand ?....Almost too small to do anything with, I fear.

Superglue and a pair of tweezers ?

Can you pop a piccy up ?
Cheers - Phil

Hi,

Firstly Leon, please move this if there is a better place for this thread, I wasnt sure where to put it!

A couple of weeks ago I sent a mail to Techno a message asking if he would be interested in doing a couple of 10mm medieval commissions for me. After providing some photos and a bit of back and forth by email, Phil got cracking and this morning he sent me the following....a pic of the first finished green, a Warrior Bishop to inspire my English 100 Years War Army.

To say I am chuffed with what he has achieved is an understatement, as he has captured the look I was after which will allow me to use this sculpt for both 100YW and should I want to the crusades. He even picked up on the fact that in the pic I sent him the helmet was an unusual one with a mitre, which he has replicated beautifully. On his back is a very large shield with a cross sculpted into it, and as you can see he has a cross and a sword in his hands. The red putty is simply a feed to ease moulding.

Next up will be a few more foot soldiers for the Crusades and possibly some other other character figures for the 100YW and the Crusades. The green of the Bishop will be despatched to Leon at Pendraken HQ, for moulding sometime much much later this year I would imagine  ;)

Well done Phil, top job, I am very happy bunny  :D

Cheers,

Thanks again chaps !!
If I can find time sometime tomorrow, I'll pop up some pics of some more bits for other folk.

Think I've got the right descriptions.......
For quazar 42.....An elite Chasseur a cheval.....And 3 line horse artillery figures.
For Kustenjaeger...4 French SYW cavalry.....
For Chad.....2 x Piedmont infantry.

Excuse the spellings if I've got them wrong.....I'm trying to decipher my own handwriting at the moment.....AAARGH !! ;)

Cheers - Phil.

L/R....Kustenjaeger's 4 French SYW cavalry.....Chad's 2 Piedmont infantry....Quazar 42's Elite Chasseur a cheval plus 3 Line horse artillery figures.

As far as I'm aware Ray....These will all be going into the catalogue at some stage. ;)

Most of them will be going into the catalogue, but we may need to check on the single Naps sculpt, as I'm not sure what command would go with them.

It's an odd one as most people would probably only need a few to mix in with the Line figures. Maybe put them in a pack of 5 as with the Mounted Officers.

If you are referring to the elite chasseurs and elite hussars, there is no need for command. I would make separate elite cavalry packs as you do for the elite infantry. There was one elite company per regiment, but there were of course many regiments. I would buy elite packs of the same size as for other cavalry packs.

With the infantry Elites, they come in packs of 15 foot + 1 sergeant-type figure, so would the Elite cavalry need a corresponding command chap, and could something already in the ranges be used?

Probably not worth the effort, Leon. The elites formed one company, i.e. half a squadron or one eighth of a regiment, in most people's organisation probably two or three figures at most.

My regiments at 1:50 only need one figure, which is why I've been happy to DIY. However if you want to produce them, colpack busbies were favoured by all officers.

Early shot of James on horseback.....Nearly finished now.

The yellow screwdriver in the first couple of photo's is there just to help me focus quickly...(Cos I'm a lazy oik)..Before anyone asks ;) :P
The poles for the standards have been left deliberately that long so they (hopefully) can be used for small or huge banners....Depends on how long Dave can get them to cast !! ;) ;)

QuoteWould bills, pikes, and halberds be appropriate for Empire inf?

Possibly not bills, Michael. They seem to have been a peculiarly English innovation, but certainly pikes and halberds. Might be useful for providing alternative poses for the existing late medieval/early renaissance ranges.

I've never felt terribly constrained by GW's background fluff and practically there's not too much difference between a bill and a halberd - they're basically sharp and spiky bits on a pole :)

Strictly speaking pikes are a Dogs of War weapon but again it's a spiky bit on a pole. This is fantasy not history and fantasy sources are pretty hazy on the differences between weapons.

My, nominally, Empire Army is actually the Great Crusade of Marienburg an entirely non-canononical formation supposedly comprised of the worst elements of historical crusading armies and lead by the Inquisitor General of Marienburg.

They really ARE superb, Phil. "Oodles" sounds like I might have something to reinforce my Pendraken Landsknecht 'Empire' pikemen.

I have a soft spot for our king James, a true Renaissance prince. Shame a English pointy bit found his soft spot. For Flodden are you doing him dismounted with pike?

The capes.....Started with a thin 'sheet' of ProCreate....Just to get the rough 'flat' shape....(Allow to set )....Over the top of that I put a 'skin' of a mix of ProCreate and Magic Sculp in about a 50/50 ratio....And I 'paint' the  folds in the cape with a colour shaper.
The hair is a mix of the yellow of green stuff and the black of ProCreate...(Yukky brown colour)..And then mixed with Magic Sculp again, to soften the mix slightly.
The hands are just a mix of the blue of G/S and the white of the ProCreate.

Could do it all with Green stuff.....I just like the different consistencies of the various mixes of different putties.......Basically because it saves me a certain amount of time. ;)

Hope that helps fsn.

My plan is to add command, cavalry and maybe chariots to the range, plus nobles/generals.
Just have to see how the finances stand up over the next six months or so
This was part of my last jobs payments, and I thought I would put my money where my mouth is.
Techno has done two individual projects for me thus far, the Goblin Shaman and the 1870 Guards Limber, both filling holes in ranges and were utterly superb. This, Dark Lord permitting, will be the start of an addition to the catalogue as a new range for Pendraken to sell.

It's something I first requested a while back, but I figured I should help it along a bit. Hopefully it will be a decent enough seller as a Dark Aged/late Antiquity force for Hail Caesar/Dux Bellorum/other rule sets.

That's to make Dave's life an awful lot simpler Fred.  :) The shield would almost certainly not stand the pressure of the mould, if I made the wee chap (as he is, in the green) with his elbow bent to a more 'natural/normal' pose.
Leon may well fancy 'tweaking' the elbows of the master metals once those are done; when the shield is then effectively a part of the whole model, rather than as it is at the mo'.....a relatively brittle piece of putty that would be easy for the pressing to damage....... if it were at an angle.

(Hope that makes sense !!  ;))

Don't think my tiny version is quite as good looking as the real thing.....And the one I've made is slightly larger 'up top'.
She's in the catalogue 'somewhere' as Kiera.

Got another of my headaches. When I started on this forum, I thought the whole process was sooooo easy.

It IS......As long as you remember a few simple fair old number of basic rules.......And then throw them out of the window, to see what you can get away with. ;)

Thanks for the explanation - makes a lot of sense. Must make it quite hard to sculpt the figure in a flat pose, while thinking how it will finally look.

The Dark Lord (Who has me chained in one of the deepest, dankest cellars at Techno Towers) has given me a project of such a massive scale, that I won't really have time to do any 'personal' projects for a little while.

Presumably he hasn't fired it recently ian. He does look like he's throwing himself flat though, right enough. Nice sculpts, though a little early for my forces.

Damn, those look great Phil.

Not as good as early-WWWII USMC or Vietnam-era USMC would look, but good nonetheless, Sir.  ;) ;D

Isn't that always going to be just a slaughter rather than a battle? How do you beat massed longbowmen with massed pikemen?

Historically? March forward and run them over. If you can do it when it's a bit damp that makes it even easier.

Can't think of any battles i've read of where that worked - except for, i think, one out of dozens in the Hundred Years War where the French and Scots had the English hugely outnumbered.

The Battle of Flodden, 9th September 1513

Scots pike phalanxes, well armoured and fighting in Swiss style overran the English archery/bill formations.

Since when? The English bill slaughtered them.

Flodden is often taken as a Scots loss.
I think that is wrong.
In fact it was a massive loss!
James blowing himself up with his own artillery helps...

I'm forgetting how late Flodden was of course. By that time the nobles and some of the richer men at arms would have had high quality steel plate good enough to give some serious protection against longbow fire. I'd guess that if it was anything like some of the late Hundred Years War period battles though, not all plate armour would be high enough quality to stop most longbow arrows, and not all the Scots would have had plate armour.

The points are often made that producing men able to use a longbow needs a level of intensive commitment from society, and that there was a mounting shortage of suitable wood as time went on; bows wore out faster than England could grow yews. By Tudor times, bow wood was being imported from the Baltic.

Interesting - didn't know they ever had a shortage of wood for them

Wrong James I think, ML!   :o. James 2nd gets blown up by his own artillery in 1460. It is his grandson, innovatively and imaginatively called James 4th, who gets hacked to pieces at Flodden.

Dagnabbit, they should have chosen more original names for their kings, like George, or Henry, or Edward!

Didn't they find his preserved head in a London museum some years ago?

 (April 8 2015)
PLEASE NOTE, CHUMS ;)...... For the moment, and for a minimum of a good few months I won't be able to do any 'extras' in the ways of new sculpts or conversions for anyone.

I may be able to resurrect this at some later stage, but it all depends on how busy I am......Also how busy poor Leon & Dave are in respect of moulding and casting.
Too much to do, and not enough time to do it...For all of us.  ;)

Cheers - Phil

(I'm going to lock this thread for the time being, so there's this notice at the beginning and the end of the topic !) :P ;)
Hopefully save any confusion.  ;)

Does that mean it's not too late to add a few things to the list?
