Command groups for Legio Secunda Britannia (or the remains of Legio II Augusta) and Equites Honoriani Seniores for my Later Roman British Army for AD400.
This was what my Masters Dissertation was on (The Western Defenses of Later Roman Britain, c300 - 420AD), back in 1996/7 - nice to be going back to a really important part of my past with Clibs amazing sculpts!

Agreed - nicely done 8)
Wow great paint. Love keira the pict, really awesome

Just finishing off some 1866 Saxons, then a unit or two of Limitarii Auxilia may fall onto the painting table in a few weeks!
Lemmey,
If you haven't finished the 1866 Saxons yet, I thoroughly recommend the flags produced by Baccus 6mm. I have used them for my 1870 Saxons, and they work very well for 10mm. One sheet covers the whole army! I don't know of anyone else who makes accurate Saxon flags for this period at present.

Stop it... :'(I dont do ancients any more .... I dont do ancients any more :'(.....
Seriously, they have a really nice look about them, a kinda dark ages end of the empire type of feeling.
Very impressive.
Cheers Rob, :)
Really impressive Lemmy !
Cheers - Phil
Very nice indeed Lemmy :-bd
Cheers,
Kev
Really nice work on those boys Lemmy. What are they based for?
Thanks guys -
these are based for nothing in particular...
They will eventually have a matched enemy on the same basing. I'm leading the club into 'the true light' ;D of 10mm at the moment, and these will be my first Ancients army to be used with Hail Caesar, just need to decide what to buy in the future to fight against them - probably Clib's goths (when they arrive), or Sassanid Persians.
Or I would love to do Early Saxons, Scots/Irish or Picts, but it's a bit difficult when there is only one Pendraken figure in their army so far (Kiera)!

Great set of rules - somewhat broadly based, I find..... :D
With half term and then two weeks paternity on the way, and the 1866 Saxons finished, it was time for a break from the nineteenth century,it was time to start somethin new.
Therefore last night and this morning I prepped and undercoated three units of Later Roman Militia. I decided to get the 'dross' units painted first, then I can have fun with the 'elites' later!
Now, which units to make them?
Limitarii auxilia garrison from the Hadrians Wall hinterland is my aim, one will definitely be the garrison of Lancaster, just not sure the notitia has their shield designs, so might have to be creative on this! ;)
Three units of Later Roman Militia - superb sculpts by Clib, just awesome!
I wanted these to look slightly disorganised and scruffy, but still recognisable as units, dull and dutiful compared to the Legions.

The view I get of them on table...
Excellent Lemmey !! :-bd =D>
Cheers - Phil.
They look really good - another prompt for me to tackle the lead pile of my Late Romans
I do like the back view photo - we spend all this time painting our figures - and generally only see the backs of them - I quite like playing against my own figures I get to see the fronts of them!!
Very nicely done Lemmey 8).
Very nice ML 8)
Those troops are great. Specially like the shield patterns and the banners. Great stuff
They look really awesome!
Thanks guys! :-bd
Love these Lemmey, is there nothing you can't paint and base?
Yours (green) with envy,
Mollinary
I'm not brilliant with landscapes... ;)
Seriously, thanks. Looking to improve the basing over the next few sessions...
Those are really nice.
Excellent work here!

Any plans yet of who/what to use for your Picts? I'm after some myself for Song of Arthur and Merlin.
Not yet, no. :(
I like the way of organizing figurines on the base, very natural.
Very good job.
Cheers. BH62
Thank you, they're just waiting for a worthy opponent, like the Sassanids...
Unfortunately my Persians are based on the wrong side of the channel...I'm also waiting for someone to start some late Romans here..guess I'll once more end up painting both sides :-/
And as usual nicely done units of course! 8)
Love those saxon mercenaries, they are great!
Do we have any firm dates for when Clib will be doing the Goths/Germanics?
Well firm dates and me don't really go in the same sentence.
BUT they will be the next range I do once I get more LoA stuff done and a few AWI loose ends tied up. And I'll likely do them and release them all at once this time.
Sounds good Clib :).
I'm in when they are ready. 8)
Likewise! :-bd
And count me in too...
Finished three more units.

Thanks chaps. :)
If my seven painted units constitutes an army... :'(
I will try to get one done later. ;D
Very nice Lemmey, great painting on the standard,
kev
These are great Lemmy. The more I see these figures the more I am edging towards doing Dux Britaniarum using small bases of 10mm figures rather than a base with a single 28mm figure. I also think I could get two forces up and running faster using 10mm.
MK are talking of a campaign. I might finally get a game!
As requested, army shots.

True !!
Looking very good Lemmy. Have managed to get my first two warrior units done for the Dux Brit British army. I have found three to a penny work very well. Have now made a start on the three militia units. Did you know that The Baggage Train make some very good Late Roman/Early Dark Ages terrain in 10mm. The watch tower is brilliant!
Yup,must waiting for some cash before I order some?
Can't understand how I missed these !!
Great stuff Lemmey. :-bd =D>
Cheers - Phil.
I'll second the baggage train, Roman fort and buildings - very nice, and very quick to paint up. Not the quickest delivery (and very heavy) so if you can get them at a show I would.
They're at a show in Broughton, near Chester, second weekend of July. There will only be half a dozen traders there as it's mainly a venue for competitions (many of which appear to be fantasy). details on The Baggage Train website).
Show is Gauntlet - and it's 6th-7th - 1st WEEKEND in JULY.

Seguntienses (an auxilia palatina unit), or Cohors I Sunicorum, not in the offical listing in the Brittania area of the Notitia Dignitatum, but certainly attested by pottery and numismatic evidence at Segontium (Caernarfon in Wales) until 394. They are mentioned in Comes Illyricum, and were probably withdrawn by one of the British Usurpers, then redeployed East after the 'loss' of Rome.

thumbs up pal
Pity they've all come out with weird colour balance! :-\ Mix of halogen and a 100 watt bulb (an old one), recently I've been shooting in sunlight or led lighting, much clearer and bluer lights...
What is/are MeG please?
Mortiem et Gloria, a new set on ancients rules due out in July.
Loads of Romans! Great stuff.
The pink cast to the photos will be from a halogen lamp - I've had this in the past, made bases look a weird purple/brown.
Terrific work, Will. 8)

Despite light I think they look great.
QuoteMortiem et Gloria, a new set on ancients rules due out in July.
I am always interested in a new set of Ancients rules, any hints as to how the rules work?
Nice Late Romans too. :)
They work very well!
Card driven activation, but each card has its own value, black, white, yellow, green, red. Black means your not doing much, the red means you'll be running round your enemies!
Combat is by file, and pluses upgrade your dice, following the same order as cards, black and white means you won't get much done, green is 50 kills, red is lethal!
Units all break at 50%.
Brilliant fun
Cheers for that ML, they do sound fun, I shall keep an eye out for when they are published.
A great looking army.

I will share a tip:
I use only one focus and a mirror in the other side of the miniature, which gives a natural soften of the shadows using the reflexion of the light form hte focus...
easy, cheap, effective and easy to store

Looking very nice indeed. This is an army I want to develop to face my Sassanids. I should be able to manage most of it using the leftovers from my Dux Brittaniarum project, but will need some spiffy Pendraken cataphracts and horse archers.
Those are very jolly!
:-bd
Any chance of Huns and/or Goths and/or assorted Germanic types to fight against the Late Romans??
Regards,
Geoff
That's damn ironic.
I started doing some 'goths' using Pendraken dollies...with permission from Leon...For someone else.
They'll probably never see the light of day. :'( :'(

I picture them as very tall, with flying buttresses and stained glass windows.
Has Nobby given you access to my web-cam, Kitty ?
(I think the ones I've done are visi-goths.....or were they Ostra-goths (?).....I lose track....and can't spell.)
Cheers - Kermit.
I understand that their own names for themselves were Visi and Thervingi anyway.
The Visi bit, I can understand.....But how did Thervingi get corrupted to 'Ostra'.
I think people make things up as they go along. ;) ;D
